Would you share a double room to save on rent?

DD and her gf have been together for four years and are graduating this year. They are planning to move to London where they will work/further study. They are currently planning on sharing a room in a flat in order to save on rent. They can get a fairly large bedroom centrally and still save money. Do you think this is a good idea?

In their eyes they are getting a nicer bedroom and much better location and still saving money so win win. However, I am a tad apprehensive that they'll want to strangle one another after a week or so. Of course I'm just being nosey old mum !!

They are partners? Like they are in a relationship? I don't see the issue.

I share a bedroom with my partner (And yes I do occasionally want to strangle him Grin)

JollyGiraffe · 07/03/2019 22:04

It would mean they are moving in together as a couple.

How old are they?

When I left uni me and my boyfriend at the time got a bedsit together. Some of the happiest times of my life! I did however, also want to kill him too. It’s what being that age is for, surely?!

PrawnOfCreation · 07/03/2019 22:06

Been together 4 years and sharing a room. Heavens what will the neighbours think!

MightyAtlantic · 07/03/2019 22:07

It's quite common for young couples to do this, I think. It would be tough going if you were sharing with a friend all the time, but if it's with your partner it's surely just like living together in any other situation?

Mum2jenny · 07/03/2019 22:10

Seems ok and normal to me. What are your specific objections?

Cwenthryth · 07/03/2019 22:12

With a partner, yes of course, that’s completely normal! I’ve lived in a 6 bedroom house with 10 people because most rooms were couples. It’s busy and cosy but completely normal. I loved it at the time.

SoyDora · 07/03/2019 22:13

If they’re a couple, surely it would be more unusual for them to have separate bedrooms?

PeanutB · 07/03/2019 22:13

I'm not sure OP is referring to them being in a relationship but more girl friends rather than partners? But i may be wrong, I see no reason why they couldnt share a room either way if they are close.

SoyDora · 07/03/2019 22:14

But if they were just friends you wouldn’t normally refer to them as having ‘been together’ for four years?

starzig · 07/03/2019 22:15

I think it's fine. A lot of couples share a bedroom if they can't afford a house big enough for separate bedrooms. If they are happy, they can save money to put toward a bigger flat to have their own rooms later if they like.

PeanutB · 07/03/2019 22:16

Well in that case, not sure why they would have seperate bedrooms lol?? I'm confused why thia is an issue.

blueskiespls · 07/03/2019 22:18

I'd have thought it would be odd not to share a room with your partner if you are 'together' and living in the same house?

MumUnderTheMoon · 07/03/2019 22:37

I shared a room with a mate to save on rent we had bunk beds it was grand.

safariboot · 07/03/2019 22:53

As long as neither of them snores they'll be fine.

EyesAreNeverClosing · 07/03/2019 23:00

As they have been together for 4 years I think it's fine as presumably the relationship is quite stable. If it had only been a few months I would be more concerned about what would happen if they split up and they only had 1 room. One of them can always go to a communal area or go out if they need a bit of space.

NuffSaidSam · 07/03/2019 23:05

I think if they have access to communal areas it will be fine - it will just be normal living together.

If it's one of these house shares where every room is a bedroom, so there is no escape from each other I would be wary. It would be a shame if they split because of the living conditions and I think anyone would drive you mad if you had to be in one room with them all the time!

BackforGood · 07/03/2019 23:13

@shteiner
I think you need to come back and clarify if your dd is thinking of sharing a room with a friend / pal / mate.... 2 single beds (as the title sort of implies) or if they are a 'couple' / partners / in a relationship as the opening post suggests, as that will affect everyone's replies.

Illuminore · 07/03/2019 23:33

I think the OPs question is do you think they should rent a room in a house share as opposed to an entire flat to save money.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2019 07:52

If they are in a relationship (lovers) then yes it would be fine to share. If they are just mates then no I think it is good to have your personal space. Mind you, only you know what your daughter (and possibly her partner/friend) is like.
