Is this an acceptable attempt at a WBD costume?

Ds’s school are doing WBD tomorrow. The theme is a series of books and they have to dress up as one of the characters. We were given notice about this about a month ago so there’s been plenty of time to get costumes together. From speaking to other mums at pick up it sounds like there’s a lot of very elaborate costume making going on, as it’s a specific theme it’s not easy to just buy a premade costume.

From the beginning ds was saying he didn’t want to dress up and would just wear school uniform. He’s autistic, hates any kind of dressing up and has always just worn his school uniform to previous events like this, even if it’s just a generic non-uniform. He’s never been bothered that he’s the only one not dressed up.

At 6pm he announced he wants to dress up 🙄. I’m actually quite pleased as he’s never even contemplated it before. However, even though I do actually have enough bits lying around to be able to make an ok attempt st an outfit he has dismissed my suggestions. He wants to wear a plain t-shirt with the name of the character written across it in pen.

Will that be ok? The letter home about it says that if children don’t want to dress up they must wear school uniform, if they turn up in their own clothes they will be asked to get changed. I’m worried it will look like he just wanted to wear his own clothes, especially as he will put a jumper over the top of his scribbled on t-shirt. I have suggested that he could wear a long sleeved t-shirt under his ‘costume’ t-shirt but he looked st me as if I’d gone mad.

I’ve messaged his teacher but obviously don’t expect her to read it now before tomorrow. I’d hate someone to comment on his costume as he’s super sensitive and him agreeing to ‘dress up’ is a big thing for him.

Go in with him and explain they need to accept his “costume” as a reasonable adjustment due to his autism.

(My son used to wear his Thomas the Tank tabard over his uniform to every single non uniform day!)

Thanks comefrom I hadn’t thought about going in with him. Hopefully he’ll let me, he may try and sneak off as he hates me speaking for him.

Which character is he going as?

Ordinary clothes with a lightening bolt on his head could pass as Harry Potter.

Ordinary clothes with Aslan written across the front perhaps wouldn’t be as passable!

In all honesty though, I doubt anyone would care. Would they?

I second going in for a quick word with teacher. I'm sure they will be understanding.

maz it’s Mr Men characters. So he’ll just be wearing a plain t shirt with Mr Snow written in sharpie on it.

At the school I work at there were a few children today wearing a hand drawn Tom Gates t shirt, so the book cover doodles drawn on with a sharpie. Easy and looked effective. I really hope they don't turn away children for coming in ordinary clothes, such a wrong attitude for a day of learning.

coolcrispsnow · 07/03/2019 20:30

Well that would be just like what I'd imagine Mr Snow to look like, if the top is white. Tbh I cannot see the teacher taking the time to make a fuss over this.

Sorry, cross post!

I do this most years as DS hates dressing up.

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a child (especially one with ASD) doing this (teacher and SENCO). You’ve sent a note in. Perhaps pop to the office or speak to the SENCO if you can’t talk to his teacher and explain it to them, just so that there isn’t any doubt?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 07/03/2019 20:34

Will he wears a hat and a scarf too?

RedSpottyKettle · 07/03/2019 20:48

The teacher won’t care. You don’t need to go in with him. Half of my class were just in regular non uniform today.

MeowthThatsRight · 07/03/2019 20:53

The t shirt is red and he won’t consider wearing an accessories. I could put a hat and scarf in his bag as a token gesture though.

The reason the school is doing themed dress up is that the head got really pissed off at all the year 5’s and 6’s coming in last year dressed up as Harry Potter in the summer holidays or just wearing random Minecraft clothing.
