@thunderstorms what I mean is getting my head around knowingly sleeping on a bed after it has been cleaned up from cat wee

OP, with respect, this is an anonymous forum hence why no one knows what else is going on in any other poster’s life.

HarrySnotter · 06/03/2019 22:24

OP I'd be exactly the same and wouldn't want to sleep on it either. Some folks clearly don't mind sleeping on a pissy mattress - I would. Different strokes, I guess ...

If you use biological washing powder/liquid diluted with water to break down the enzyme first. Then use surgical spirit to clean it afterwards it will take the odour away. Good luck

HarrySnotter · 06/03/2019 22:25

And isn't that a very good reason to be kind @FamilyOfAliens.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 06/03/2019 22:27

Sorry, my lovely boy pissed on 3 mattresses in the first month we had him. Easy to say 'keep him out the room', but one was in the room he was confined to when first acquired. Others were in the next room which SIL accidentally let him into while I was away. They all had to be skipped. Could not get rid of the stink of recently neutered Tom cat piss.

Luckily he is very beautiful and loving so he got away with it.

Iamnobirdandnonetensnaresme · 06/03/2019 22:28

This is why I have a carpet washer Hoover in the house.
Sucks the worst of the wee out then washes it as much as possible then spray with enzyme spray from vet.

My cats pissed on the duvets whenever they got the chance when we first got them, even if you were asleep under it at the time!

Get the mattress as wet as you dare and then put towels over the damp and stand on them, keep replacing the towels until nothing more comes off.

FelicityPorcine · 06/03/2019 22:33

This will get rid of the smell. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01CZNPEZ0/ref=asc_df_B01CZNPEZ058706775/?hvlocphy=9044983&linkCode=df0&hvptwo&psc=1&hvnetw=g&hvadid=309904185557&creative=22110&hvpone&hvlocint&creativeASIN=B01CZNPEZ0&th=1&hvpos=1o2&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl&hvqmt&tag=mumsnetforum-21&hvtargid=pla-354965249754&hvrand=16825362420566431804 Usually cats will only do this for a reason. Either they are ill, distressed about something or get shut in, might be worth investigating. If you spray this on and let it sink through it will destroy the urine which has sunk into the mattress as it goes. It really is good stuff (have had cats my whole life and this is the best stuff for the job).

Fuppy · 06/03/2019 22:33

Use white vinegar, then detergent with enzyme breakdown, rinse, leave to dry.

Has worked for me with old incontinent dog and cat 'accidents'.

CouldBeAnyoneReally · 06/03/2019 22:33

Maybe you could claim on your contents insurance if you have accidental damage cover? Might be worth asking or checking your policy.

I can totally believe that cats do revenge. I once had to go away three nights for work so my mother looked after my cat. The cat hated my mother's guts so wasn't pleased with the arrangement. I came home and the cat had managed to execute a perfect crap inside one of my new trainers. I don't even know how she managed to get her bum in there, but it was beautifully done if you're a connoisseur of cat crap in bizarre places. I can understand why she might have resorted to stress peeing and pooping but the trainer thing? Pure spite.

I miss that cat. She was totally unhinged, more than a bit vicious and impossible to housetrain (I tried but she came to me as a rescue when she was a few years old and already set in her ways) but she was a one-off.

FelicityPorcine · 06/03/2019 22:37

There’s usually worse bodily fluids in beds (sweat, grease from hair, saliva etc). I don’t know how you people who can’t sleep in a bed which has been soiled and then cleaned manage to sleep a wink in hotel beds Hmm

Canshopwillshop · 06/03/2019 22:38

My bastard cat did the same to our v expensive new mattress! Must be the new smell?? Anyway, scrubbed it and febreezed it and it’s fine. Hope you sort yours OP (the mattress not the cat 😅)

ineedaknittedhat · 06/03/2019 22:38

It could be sick with cystitis or a kidney problem. Males in particular are at risk of a blockage in the urethra. Stress can also make a cat pee or dirty in unusual places.

I'd advise taking the cat to the vet for a checkup. They'll be able to tell if its bladder is uncomfortable and also obtain a urine sample.

Make sure it has plenty of water available and increase the availability of wet food as dry foods often lead to problems with the kidneys and bladder.

ALargeGinPlease · 06/03/2019 22:38

Mine peed on my new(ish), very expensive baavet wool duvet.
I washed it, but when the bloody thing did it again, the duvet shrank...i've had to get a washable, synthetic one now ...and of course, the cat doesn't wee on this one!

Crickintheneck · 06/03/2019 22:38

Sorry, that doesn't actually help with your problem, OP, but you are not alone!!

Maybe. But it definitely isn’t a reason for the OP to berate a poster for not being aware of something the OP hasn’t told them.

Did i say I'd be ok sleeping on a pissy mattress? No.
But I think OP needs to suck it up and clean it. She moans at me for not having empathy towards her but where's her empathy towards her cat? The pet she supposed to love and doesn't actually understand about material things and could well be ill.
"Struggle to get past this" is a bit extreme when it can be cleaned and was an accident.
True, i dont know what going on in her life, and she didn't divulge so I can only go on what she said on here, it's a bit of an extreme reaction.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/03/2019 13:02

If you are really considering not keeping the mattress, @Se7en11, can I suggest white vinegar, as a last resort? It has to be proper white vinegar, not the alternatives.

We used it when our elderly cat started weeing indoors, on the carpet, and it really did kill the smell. The room did smell like the chippy, for a while, but that smell cleared away in a few hours, whereas the cat wee smell would have stayed forever.

DaffydownClock · 07/03/2019 13:58

I'm still baffled as to how our very dim cat managed to crap in my wellies. Not the best thing to discover with bare feet 😖
We had a love/hate relationship hardllysurprising.

Se7en11 · 07/03/2019 14:28

thank for all the positive messages
im still miffed about the cat wee
will see how it goes with getting the mattress wee free
I still love my cat - do feel I am entitled to be cross thoughConfused

Cats like a consistent scent profile throughout a house. New things bother them.

madcatladyforever · 07/03/2019 14:32

One of my cats wee'd on the matress once it stank to high heaven. You need to soak it thoroughly with biological washing powder a really good expensive brand then go over it with an upholstery cleaner then do it again and leave outside to dry. Put back on the bed pissy side down.
Good luck, I was furious - obviously not with the animal - the cat doesn't understand, just at the work and mess.
It was an expensive memory foam matress too so I couldn't afford to throw it away. I think the smell has gone now.

Deathraystare · 07/03/2019 15:06

If the cat is used to going in that room and you have put something new in there, he/she 'needs' to mark it as 'theirs'. They do not do it to spite. If the cat is unsure of something, it will need to make it his/her own.

Do you have enough toys, and places other than that room the cat can go to that they can 'own' such as cat 'trees' - whatever they are called, where they can climb and sit on?
