I was interviewed at the beginning of November, offered the job a week later- Paperwork all submitted and entry exams done in October, then nothing until now- inductions end of this month.. Is this a normal turn around time for recruiting? 4 months??

Yes it's totally normal. The NHS recruitment system is incredibly slow. I was offered a job in may and didn't start until September.

Frokoko · 06/03/2019 14:03

Oh thank you!
Are the inductions paid do you know?

Mmmhmmokdear · 06/03/2019 14:06

Yep. I was offered my job in the October and didn't start until the January! I had to chase HR so much as well. I got paid for my induction.

x2boys · 06/03/2019 15:10

Yes ,i haven't worked for the NHS for a few years , but it's always been slow even in the days before DBS checks etc

Sarah2809 · 06/03/2019 15:26

I was offered an internal job on 8th January and my start date has just come through for 1st April... It takes AGES!

Frokoko · 06/03/2019 15:34

Thought it would be much quicker! Any advice on footwear? Its a HCA position, are trainers ok? Full black or do they need to be proper shoes?

KinkyHair · 06/03/2019 15:51

We are allowed trainers our ward but I personally prefer a shoe that can be wiped over at the end of the shift.

WhenTheDragonsCame · 06/03/2019 16:06

I got offered a HCA job on 2nd February last year and I didn't start training until June. I was offered a different post in November and start later this month.

I have Sketchers that I wear. They are all black but more comfortable than proper shoes. When working on the ward I only sit down for my 15/30 minute break and my feet can be pretty sore by the time I finish.

mymugmytea · 06/03/2019 16:07

HCA here, I was interviewed in April and started in July!
As far as I remember inductions are paid for.
I wear lace up black skechers that can go in the washing machine. Make sure your footwear is comfortable, you will be on your feet a lot! Just checked my pedometer and I've done 11k steps already today.
I love it tho, good luck!

WhenTheDragonsCame · 06/03/2019 16:08

You might appreciate shoes that you can wipe when you accidentally spill someone's urine down your leg or they throw up on your foot!

Frokoko · 06/03/2019 17:08

Ahhh so a leather type shoe? Any links if you don't mind!

Bluetrews25 · 06/03/2019 17:32

Induction is paid.
I got some good comfy leather shoes from Wynsors, believe it or not, for under £10.
You will want wipe clean, without little holes in the upper.
Visualise how easy it would be to wipe off vomit/liquid poo cleanly.
Saw some memory insoles in Aldi today - central aisle - these might be good to get, I got gel ones from there and they are great.

AnaVanda · 06/03/2019 17:39

Skechers go walk are so comfortable and light. They are quite expensive but last for ages and can be washed in the washing machine.

Pinkstars2501 · 06/03/2019 17:47

Care assistant in a nursing home here, I wear the ugliest shoes going but SO comfy, Clarks unloops. £60ish but mine have lasted 3 years and I’m only just thinking of new ones because they look a bit tired.

Frokoko · 06/03/2019 20:36

Thanks for the suggestions :-)
Excited to start- anyone work on maxfaxward or urology? What's it like in general?

OP posts:
jcq17 · 06/03/2019 20:43

Interview in August started in December... it's totally normal for it to take so long. I wear sketchers they are absolutely amazing for how long I'm on my feet and I'd say 80% of the girls in my dept wear them too, the others wear leather Clark's. And yes you should get paid for induction.

jcq17 · 06/03/2019 20:44

I work on Maxfax and I love it!

Frokoko · 06/03/2019 21:21

Are they the go walk ones as PP mentioned? Are they easy to wipe down?
Whats it like JCQ? whats your usual shift like? If you don't mind me asking

LinenLou · 06/03/2019 21:43

I wear leathery sketchers but many of my colleagues wear shoes from Clark's because they last well and have comfort soles. Clark's also offer NHS discount to most trusts. It's worth checking your staff benefits section on the trust intranet to see if you're offered this.

JohnnyHatesJazz · 06/03/2019 23:08

CLarks Unloops are your friend. They're not cheap but last far longer than any Skechers ones. Maybe get the Skechers for your throbbing feet days off?

jcq17 · 09/03/2019 17:07

Well I work in maxfax outpatients so don't know if that's where you're going but i love it. I do 7.30/5.30 mon-thurs.

Frokoko · 09/03/2019 19:45

No, Im on the ward

OP posts:
Feilin · 09/03/2019 21:22

Ckarks unloop best shoes for working long shifts. I work on a ward and many of the staff wear them. Well worth the money.
