Hi, I've got to come up with a world book day costume today! I really resent buying one.

Any easy tips? Struggling to get to the shops as I've one poorly child at home just to add to the problem.

Thanks

How old is the child?

PlayingForKittens · 06/03/2019 11:58

Most children in books are just in normal clothes. What age are your children and what do they read?

WatchingTheWheels85 · 06/03/2019 11:59

How old? My dd8 is going as anne from the famous five so no buying involved. Ds6 is going as burglar bill again very simple.

Do you have any orange yarn at home? Split in into two braids and somehow secure it onto your child’s head. Stick them is the saddest looking dress you can find and you have yourself an Anne of green gables,

girlofthenorth · 06/03/2019 12:06

Go as a muggle !!! I saw this somewhere - really good idea - can wear own clothes ! ( Harry Potter )

ILiveInSalemsLot · 06/03/2019 12:08

Go in normal clothes. Fill a small bottle with coloured water. George’s marvellous medicine.

twistable · 06/03/2019 13:26

Ah, George. I think I'll do that! Thanks

Any animal onesies on the house? DS2 is going as the monkey from The Giraffe, the Pelly & Me, in his monkey onesie with a window scraper.

Black top/tshirt - size not desperately important, black leggings, eyeliner as whiskers - it's a cat. Numerous cats in books - my youngest went as Toto the Ninja Cat last year.

SummerHouse · 06/03/2019 14:11

Pockets full of monopoly money = billionaire boy.
"Muggle" is the best idea ever. I am so using this.

SummerHouse · 06/03/2019 14:12

Add a hat to implants idea and I give you the cat in the hat...

EssentialHummus · 06/03/2019 14:12

I think Cat / Cat in Hat is the easiest to cobble together. Or a ghost? Bunny ears for Peter Rabbit etc? A crown for any vaguely royal character?

pinkhorse · 06/03/2019 14:21

Do you have any bandages? Ds went as Mr bump a few years ago. Wore a blue t shirt and wrapped bandages round his head!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 06/03/2019 16:23

All in black... Peter Pans shadow.

ScarletBitch · 06/03/2019 17:36

DS3 aged 7 is going as The Mad Hatter. George at Asda have loads of great costumes which were between £10/£15

IvanaPee · 06/03/2019 17:39

Peter Pan’s shadow is brilliant! As is a muggle!

Boys: football kit. Book 'Frankie's Magic Football' series.
Girls: pretty frock - Princess from any number of books.
Ballet costume, any book about dance.

Lexilooo · 06/03/2019 18:15

Girl: nightdress - sophie from BFG. normal clothes and a large book - mathilda. Blue face paint and blue clothes - violet from Charlie and the chocolate factory after she turns into a blueberry.

Boy: Normal clothes and chocolate bar or home made golden ticket - Charlie from Charlie and the chocolate factory.
Normal clothes and small bottle labelled "medicine" - George's Marvellous Medicine.

Most roald dahl books don't require special costumes, just a simple prop or two. Do a character from any your child knows.

Any of the famous five, or secret seven wear normal clothes. The children in the Narnia books just wear normal clothes (though a fake fur coat and/or a bar of turkish delight might help the costume)

If you have or could make a witches hat the worst witch.

Have you got any dressing up outfits already? Things like animals? Pirates? Princesses? Fairy? Cowboy? You could work most of those into being a book character.

Lexilooo · 06/03/2019 18:17

Any sports or activities kit at home? Football, gymnastics, horse riding, ballet etc? Lots of books based on activities that you could use.
