I’d really appreciate some suggestions on first finger food for a 6 month old.

We are predominately weaning with purées but would like to introduce some finger foods.

I’m going shopping later today so would love some ideas.

DSs first food was fingers of cooked (boiled) sweet potato.

He also had broccoli shortly after and strawberries.

From about 9m he liked pasta (fusilli are the easiest to hold imo) with grated cheese and peas. He didn’t like toast but liked baguette/bread rolls.

Little strips of omelette are good and cut up fruit goes down well.

raw carrot?

Toast fingers, cucumber sticks, sticks of cheese, sweet potato wedges baked in the oven, steamed apple wedges. Things which are not too slippery at first while baby gets used to picking them up.

The Ella's Kitchen melty sticks are dead easy for them to hold and eat - they may not be the most nutritious but they are great for practising with :)

We did steamed carrot and broccoli

Any veg would be a good one, we did baby corn today ( sliced down the middle) asparagus went down well as well.

Just a little bit of anything you're eating. Ideally should be large enough for them to hold in their hand/fist, so resist the temptation to cut things up tiny.

I'm pretty sure that buttered toast is one of the first things my DC tried.

Don't worry if there's some coughing and gagging as they learn to chew and swallow :)

Ella’s kitchen’s melty sticks are great for on the go

Fingers of a non crumbly cheese, edam type.
Fingers of cold frittata or omelette.
Toast spread with cream cheese.

I didn't do finger food with my two other than foods that are eaten by adults with their fingers such as sandwiches, bagels etc. I just cut them in half or in quarters.

My 9 month old loves those Ella's kitchen melty sticks! If anyone opens a pack of crisps near her she thinks its the melty sticks and is less than pleased when she realises there not.

GahWhatever · 06/03/2019 15:31

When she's a little older and ready for a pincer grip, individual rice crispies are fun and melt on the tongue (unlike raisins).

Cooked green beans, toast, rice cakes, tofu: anything that can be broken off easily really.

A strip of avocado, a boiled carrot stick, a grilled courgette baton... basically cooked vegetable they can grasp. I would personally avoid raw carrot/apple or similar until 18 months+ due to the choking risk. I also wouldn't be too hasty to offer fruit as it's best to establish savory foods first. Really at 6 months it's just to experience different textures and tastes, it's nothing to do with nutrition which will all be coming from milk still and will until 12 months.

Pretty much all the suggestions so far, although melty sticks must be new, they weren't around 7 years ago! 😂
