I’ve had food poiseoning, and thought I had recovered, but I keep needing loo every few mins. I’m breast feeding and at midnight I started a feed, was so tired I stopped and put her back. Now she’s screaming, I keep having to go loo and don’t want to take her with me. No more milks comjng throufh.

Really upset and stressed and I’m worried I won’t get any sleep as keep needing the loo and it’s like dirty water.

Single parent. Mum bags at me to bf and never give up but tines like this I want to pull my hair out.

What hell! I breastfed my son but became very ill when he was a few weeks old. He was given a bottle of ready made formula (because I had bought some just in case) and he took whatever he was given by whoever was handy for the three days I was unavailable. I resumed bf'ing when we were reunited but always also gave him a bottle a day from then on. We did that for 18 months and so far so good (he's a strapping teen now). I don't know how difficult it was to get him to take that bottle but he certainly didn't starve so my advice would be if you have one handy give it to your baby. There are times, even momentarily, when breastfeeding is not best and this may be one of them for you.

I hope you feel better soon.

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 01:38

I don’t have any formulas, I gave her boiled water and she’s finally asleep now. I was just so tired I stopped at midnight. Will shake myself awake at next feed because stopping meant I had no more milk.

I’m so worried about my supply, she has to scream for ages to get it to come through. 😞 it’s really hard and upsetting and I’m so tired. She’s asleep now but I’ve got a night on the loo!

Well i cant remember details of what happened in my case as I really was very ill but I didn't feed him for 3 days and I think my supply re established easily enough. If I had been able I would have worried and fretted over what was happening as breastfeeding had been important to me but in hindsight I would still say that but only when it worked for both of us. When you are ill it is not working for you. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids because she will take whatever you have left in you!

That's rotten, I'm really sorry!

ohtheholidays · 06/03/2019 02:17

Have you got any family or friends that can step in and help look after the baby and you OP?

I can remember getting gastroenteritis when my second DC was 6 weeks old,my first DC was only 2 and my dickhead then husband(now ex husband)fucked off to work and left me to cope and I was breastfeeding and had no formula or bottles in the house.

It was the worst night of my life!

Grab any decent help you can OP and think about buying some formula and a couple of bottles and sterilser if you don't have one,it's always worth having another way of feeding your baby when an emergency like this happens.

I hope you feel alot better soon. Flowers

Try to keep hydrated and take dioralyte or similar. Eat gentle foods little and as often as you can manage. Breastfeeding will help your baby's immunity, if you feel able to do so.

Is your baby quite young (just guessing as you mentioned low supply)? It is normal to have nights where there seems to be no supply at first, but nights like that (non stop feeding) exist in order to increase your supply. Unfortunately, in your position, your low supply may be exacerbated by being so unwell.

You mentioned that your baby has to scream for ages before your supply comes through... are you referring to the 'let down' reflex sensation? If you latch your baby on, that should trigger the let down reflex (you don't need to wait until you feel it - often you'd be waiting forever. Additionally, some women don't feel it!).

If you're happy to breastfeed (I noticed you mentioned your mum, but it has to be your decision based on what you feel is best for you and your baby), I'd carry on as you are but do look after yourself. That might mean giving some formula if you need to, but be aware of the effect on your supply if you do so. In the early days my supply dropped if I didn't eat/drink/sleep enough (so you have 'the perfect storm' going on here). Be mindful of that and try not to worry about your supply - it will increase once you're feeling better.

Flowers You must feel awful. I hope you feel better soon.

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 02:28

Thanks all, my dd is over 3 months I used to have so much it seemed but my supply seemed to drop before this I’llness. I’m feeling a lot worse. Sickness has started too. Her dads coming tomorrow. I was poorly but me and my mum kept clashing and I ate the wrong foods. Tonight I had salon and salty foods my mum had cooked. I feel so awful now.

kellymom.com/hot-topics/low-supply/

Just adding a couple of links. This website was recommended by a midwife and really helped me in the early days!

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 02:29

Her dad stayed Sunday to help but I felt so much better she she nearly slept through. Now thankfully she’s asleep but I’m feeling worse and worse. 😞

Poppins2016 · 06/03/2019 02:40

Poor you, it sounds as though you're having a really rough time!

Re supply, have a look at the KellyMom link in my post above, it's packed with really useful info.

It would probably be worth sticking to a really bland diet tomorrow. Could you ask your DDs dad to bring over some food of your choice tomorrow? Hopefully you can also catch up on some sleep, too. Don't be afraid to ask others to facilitate what you need right now (e.g. food, drink, nap). You're a new mum, you're unwell, you need looking after!

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 02:56

Thanks poppins, her Dad is lovely and he stayed over night but I didn’t need him. Think I pushed myself went straight out Monday to massage ect and just carried on. It’s caught up with me today, been to the loo million times this evening and I feel so sick. Thankfully dd is asleep but I want to cry because as soon as i’ll Be able to sleep she’ll wake for a feed. I can’t stand this I can’t. I want to sleep so badly but I need needing the loo. Worried i’ll Have accident in my bed. Got dd in with me so she’d sleep as can’t cope if she’s screaming. 😞

My mums a nurse upstairs asleep and I can’t bother her as she’s leaving for work at 4am. In fairness other day she couldn’t help much either as she was unwell.

FurrySlipperBoots · 06/03/2019 03:16

Does her dad have the day off today? If so I would drop him a text, ask if he can possibly come now, tonight. He could pick up some ready made formula cartons and a couple of bottles at a 24 hour supermarket. It won't harm your milk supply for your DD to have a couple of emergency bottles, and it sounds like you're too poorly to be in sole charge.

Poppins2016 · 06/03/2019 03:22

My DS isn't really that far apart in age in the grand scheme of things (he's 5 months), but it feels like he's much older when I look back at 'the early days'. Nobody tells you how hard it is when you (or they) are ill, or how the (normal!) nights feel so long, as though you have a marathon to get through! You feel as though you just can't do it, but you can. Try to hold onto the fact that this feeling will pass (so will the difficult nights!).

When will your DDs dad arrive? You just need to count down to that point and then you know you can definitely sleep (although you never know, you might start feeling better and get some sleep before then). Could you ask if he can come earlier and/or if he can stay tomorrow night?

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 03:28

He’s been really surfering as he’s had his wisdom tooth out, i don’t want him to come now as then he’ll be too tired in the day while she’s awake 😞 I don’t know what’s best, I need to call gp. Wish I could be in hospital right now like when I had section and have help. Never thought I’d want to be there agai !

OP posts:
FurrySlipperBoots · 06/03/2019 03:47

Can you afford paid help? Depending on where you are there are agencies that provide emergency maternity nurses/nurses that can step in at times like this. For a terrifying price tag of course, but if you need help you need help!

Poppins2016 · 06/03/2019 04:14

Definitely call the GP for advice, or even NHS 111 (they can advise over the phone). It does sound like a nasty bug.

I don't know the full situation so I might be too cynical here, but I've had wisdom teeth out and I've had sleepless nights with a newborn when ill. Both are miserable experiences. Don't let your DDs dad trump your needs with his. You're both parents and if he was living with you (or indeed, if he was you/the mother) he'd get no choice!

It does make sense to let him get some rest now in order for you to then swap over during the day... but only if you're coping adequately (only you can make that call, but it does sound as though you're struggling as you're so ill).

Poppylizzyrose · 06/03/2019 09:17

Morning all, I’ve got an appointment with gp, but I’d have to leave dd with her Dad and drive there (5mins) my issue is how the hell can I get there, wait and be seen without pooing myself 😞 I’ve been glued to the loo and it hasn’t changed today. I feel so weak and don’t know if it’s safe to drive. I asked for a doctor to call me but recdptionship said they might need to examine.

If your too poorly to get in what do you do? Luckily I’ve managed a decent feed this morning and I’m taking a Medicine I can’t spell which has missing salts in ect. It’s been mentioned here.

It’s catch 22 though isn’t it, I’m too poorly to go to the doctors and sit and wait and drive there, and even dreading I get some prick who tells me what I already know and suggests bed rest! When that’s so difficult with a baby. 😭😭

How are you doing Poppy?

I hope you managed to get to the Dr's and they've been able to help. Flowers

If you ever have a bad stomach and have to go to the Dr's again(although I hope you don't)you can buy tena lady pants in supermarkets, not great having to wear them I know but if it helps you get to a Dr's appointment then they're worth having a packet at home.

Dowser · 07/03/2019 19:36

Aww bless you sounds like he’ll
Hope you’re feeling better today
