Going rate for a teen babysitter

Do you pay by the hour? We're in the North if that makes any difference. Probably looking at 2-3 hours in the evening, back around 10pm ish. 2 kids, one will be in bed but awake so can introduce her to the babysitter then lights off before we go. Other one will be upstairs reading and probably pop down a couple of times to say hello but will generally look after herself.

£7 an hour. 3 DC - the 2 year old is always in bed before we leave and the 8 yr old and 6yr old put themselves to bed at 8pm.

BibbityBobbityEars · 05/03/2019 22:39

£5 per hour (Midlands)

superram · 05/03/2019 22:40

£7 an hour, West London. Usually round it up.

I've always done £8ph as a babysitter & £12 if you have 2 children and people have been happy with that around here (south east).

Honeypickle · 06/03/2019 11:45

To add - we're in the south east. We do always round up too (so the minimum we would pay out is £20 even if well under 3 hours).

Oh My I am so glad my DC are grown up. in the early 90's we used to go out at 6.30pm come back at midnight and our babysitter got £5 she even bathed and put them both to bed after making them supper. Surely if it is a teenager they are just happy to be somewhere away from their parents and happy with a few quid ( maybe not!!) When I used to babysit I got a pound but it was great being able to watch what I wanted on telly all night. I think I need to get with the timesGrin

Nautiloid · 06/03/2019 11:51

I got £4 an hour in 1995!

PurplePink19 · 06/03/2019 11:55

We pay £7.5/hour for 3 kids. They are usually already in bed when we go out and we always give her an extra £5 or so to round up the total amount. A few weeks ago I took the older children out on a day trip and she watched our 20 month old for 5 hours. I still paid £7.5/hour and gave some extra on top. She's great!!

PurplePink19 · 06/03/2019 11:55

Forgot to mention, south west London.

GetTheStartyParted · 06/03/2019 13:05

We pay £5 per hour but DS is 10 and rather self sufficient, he doesn't require much more than someone older being in the house. Generally one of the older siblings (aged 20 and 23) will be around if the babysitter needs anything. We often have takeaway delivered or cook for them too.

sleepraptor · 07/03/2019 06:51

Wow, generally more than I thought! I was thinking £5 ph.

WTF - yes! I got £5 a night till late plus a couple of bars of chocolate and a can of coke and thought I was lucky!

For 2-3 hours I'd give £20

AnythingConsidered · 07/03/2019 07:04

Wow! My DD is undercharging.
7-midnight = £20
Then £5 per hour after midnight.

Most parents are back by midnight. No wonder she is busy!!

SwayingInTime · 07/03/2019 07:09

£5 an hour but we often have quite short babysits so do the first hour at £10 as a sort of call out charge.

Oblomov19 · 07/03/2019 07:31

I resent paying more than £20 for an evening. That was All I ever got! Round here, Surrey, young girls are charging £10 per hour!! I refuse to hire them!

Thirtyrock39 · 07/03/2019 07:32

£5 is totally fine - also a lot of people I know say a maximum of £20. It's usually very easy money (kids in bed telly on) and provide some snacks

Equimum · 07/03/2019 07:42

We’re in the SE, which probably makes a difference (it seems to ridiculously inflate anything) and the teens round her charge £10/he. We tend to use Sitters agency, who have regional wage recommendations. We tend to get a qualified childcare worker with her own children, and she charges £8-8.50p/hr. we do pay a few agency fees, but as long as we use a babysitter monthly, it works out just as cheap!

anniehm · 07/03/2019 07:48

£5 an hour for teens, £7 for uni students, £10 for adults (over 21) is the rates my DD's get. Usually rounded up especially for short bookings
