Just gave DS pancakes for dinner and the world didn’t end

Been struggling a bit with my mental health recently. I am not diagnosed with anything but definitely something not right. I struggle massively with worrying about what ‘needs’ to be done.

DS (5) declared on the way home that he only wanted 4 pancakes and sugar for dinner. I really haven’t had a good day so decided to just give him what he wanted. Knew I couldn’t cope with the fallout from trying to make him eat dinner.

He had 3 pancakes and then asked for carrot sticks and some fruit. So that’s what he has had. I have had a relaxed evening so far, managed to prep DH and I’s dinner whilst DS was in the bath and sort tomorrow’s lunches. Hung the washing out and cleaned the kitchen floor quickly.

I know it’s not the answer to just feed DS pancakes from now on but by simply not worrying about him having a balanced meal tonight life feels better.

I don’t know why I’m writing this but felt like I needed to tell someone.

Tis the law... pancakes for dinner on pancake day... there's a bit of batter left for breakfast tomorrow morning too.

We went through 31 pancakes here (between 5 of us) guess who had to stand and cook them all.

I got the last 5 - think I deserved them after all that. Glad its not pancakes every day, so tasty but so time consuming.

You can do a lot worse than milk, flour and eggs. If it was a couple of bags of monster munch topped off with a bag or two of haribo every night, I might judge you just a tiny bit but not for lovely yummy pancakes :)

Your ds asked for carrot sticks and fruit? You've raised him well!! I dream of the day my two ask for veggies and fruitEnvy

itsboiledeggsagain · 05/03/2019 21:46

Iam feeling virtuous here as I did the first round with crudités ham and cheese. Then fruit and Yoghurt and syrup for round 2.

Maybe I was trying too hard!

PS - my floor is a mess, the clean washing is in a messy heap and my bathroom floor is a swamp as my 6 year old decided to see how far he could squirt water out of a bottle... and right now I'm too blooming tired from cooking pancakes to actually care about these facts Blush

Pancakes - dinner of champions!

GiantKitten · 05/03/2019 21:56

That's a lovely post, OP Smile

You win the internet today! Cake [pancakes]

(Carrot sticks & fruit a massive bonus too!)

GiantKitten · 05/03/2019 21:58

Genderwitched
Oh yes, pancakes with sugar and lemon for those with taste, and pancakes with chocolate sauce for the others.
It's all I provide on Pancake day.

That's exactly how it was here before they all growed up & moved out Grin

winterisstillcoming · 05/03/2019 21:58

We did the same! They'd had something at the childminders so it was pancake supper.

I have made savoury pancakes to start off with in the past with whatever veg/ham/cheese I've had in. The kids love them x

BasinHaircut · 06/03/2019 08:10

Bluemerchant DS is a complete fruit monster. He’d live on it if he could.

Carrot sticks on the other hand are a recent win for me. It’s only taken me 5.5 years to introduce a bit of veg that isn’t hidden so I wouldn’t be too impressed!

My kids have a very balanced diet, we have no sweet or fizzy drinks or anything like that in the house, we don't buy take away or have a junk food day.

My point is (there's one!), that knowing they eat properly most of the time let us completely relaxed about pancakes day, parties, and any special event. If they only want nutella pancakes all day on pancake day, fine by me.

I can't see why pancakes in themselves would be bad anyway: eggs and milk, and surely not more flour than bread which people are happy to put in pack lunch every day of the week.

I occasionally make a pancake diner, usually on Sunday night, when I can't be bothered to cook and have no time. Can't see why they would be bad for you.

mogtheexcellent · 06/03/2019 10:14

DD (nearly 5) had pancakes last night as did DH and I. She hates lemon so had just sugar on the first but hated that so had a plain one with no topping, then she had one with raspberies and ice cream (she has a hot dog at afterschool club so only needed two).

She scoffed the lot and I love lemon and sugar pancakes so it definitely going on the menu for lunches and snack teas.

mogtheexcellent · 06/03/2019 10:15

OP. try getting your DS to grate the carrot and adding it to salads. Its how I got DD eating lettuce.

SnugglySnerd · 06/03/2019 10:21

That's fine. I don't even think pancakes are particularly unhealthy. Basically flour, milk and eggs cooked in a very tiny amount of oil. More or less the same ingredients as scrambled eggs on toast! We have them for breakfast quite often and it's definitely fine to have them for tea on pancake day! Your son even asked for fruit/veg!

ariadneonnaxos · 06/03/2019 10:29

Your post made me smile, OP. Well done you for not stressing about it. I'm a big fan of picking your battles! (Plus as PPs have said, it doesn't sound like a particularly unhealthy meal anyway.)

And thanks to Bobbety for the parenting baskets.

Wendywoo1000 · 06/03/2019 10:44

We dont eat anything else for tea on pancake day. Just loads of sweet pancakes!

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 06/03/2019 10:47

Oh bless you OP. Pancakes are fantastic, and if anyone's ever been to Duinrell, the basis for an entire menu.

outpinked · 06/03/2019 11:05

I thought most people just had pancakes for dinner on pancake day Confused. I’ve done it my whole life anyway and DC certainly do now... We all had four pancakes each with a variety of toppings.

TeacupDrama · 06/03/2019 11:12

we just had pancakes at about 5.30 DD (9) had half tin tomato soup later, we had lemon and sugar or nutella

later I had carrots hummus tomatoes cheese as a snack
pancakes themselves are healthy enough it's the toppings!!

in a balanced diet there is a place for pancakes burgers ice cream cake chocolate just not every meal of every day

Shufflebumnessie · 06/03/2019 11:20

I decided not to fight DS when he requested pancakes with golden syrup for dinner. He was so excited and loved them.

Initially I felt guilty but realised that it's once in a blue moon.

brassbrass · 06/03/2019 11:20

I can totally relate to this. We put so much pressure on ourselves to do the right things by our children that we forget a cheat day doesn't make you a bad parent. It's even more important when you are struggling with your mental health so look at it as being kind to yourself. I wish someone had told me this when mine were young!

EnidButton · 06/03/2019 12:50

Totally normal just to have pancakes isn't it? I always have and did when growing up. Think of it as a big glass of milk with an egg or two and some fruit juice (lemon) So that's, calcium, protein, vitamin D, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Camomila · 06/03/2019 13:12

We (grown ups) had savoury pancakes for dinner followed by sweet pancakes for pudding.

DS 2 tried a bit of pancake to make me happy and then demanded spaghetti and sauce.

mildshock · 06/03/2019 13:26

DC had pancakes with Nutella, banana and strawberries.

They were still hungry so had a bowl of wheatabix, I couldn't be bothered with making a proper dinner after making pancakes. The earth is still turning and they were very happy with having breakfast for dinner.

DP and I had savoury pancakes later, then 1 sweet one for pudding.

As far as I can tell the earth is still turning Grin
