Six resignations from the school governing body??

So we've had a letter tonight informing parents that six governors have resigned from the school governing body. No explanation given, just that good governance will continue and the rest is confidential. Does anyone have any inkling as to what would make 6 governors resign all at once? I'll wait to be told that I'm being a nosy twat but have two children there and have had run ins with the head previously about provision for my DD who has SEN, so naturally I'm worried about what might be occurring behind the scenes. Thanks in advance!

Recent ofsted?

Sounds like problems with either the head or the chair.

There must be something going on. Most governors wait until their term expires tbh.

Falling out with Head? Chair? Did the Chair resign?

This sometimes happen when a Head decides they want to become an academy or go into an academy chain and the governors disagree. Or poor ofsted.

Possibly problems with the head.
You should ask for an explanation.

I sit on 2 bog’s
To have that many on either of mine there would need to be possibly
a serious breakdown in relations between the resigning members and the remainers
Or they would be in a situation similar to one we are in - head is alleged to be bullying staff - no formal complaint - board have to manage situation v carefully as if we are found to be bullying head out of job or causing constructive dismissal then we would be personally liable for any compensation- we have all agreed that if we find ourselves in shaky ground as to how we handle and mediate the situation - we are being advised by LA - then we would all resign before being put in that position as the LA would have to step in and handle the situation

Yep the chair has gone. There was a recent Ofsted which was my first thought too, but it was only a brief inspection as previously had been rated good. It's not on the Ofsted website yet.
The head did have a mystery absence for about 6months last year which the majority think was probably a suspension pending investigation.

I bloody hope they aren't going to an academy

hugless that sounds like a nightmare situation!

Do you know which ones, especially whether the Chair has gone?

OlennasWimple · 05/03/2019 18:29

Sounds like problems with the head - certainly not a good sign

On the other hand, going into a bit of a crisis can be positive, if you have a really good LEA who can provide a lot of support to the school

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 05/03/2019 18:31

Yes the chair has resigned. I don't think an explanation to parents is unreasonable, not convinced we'll get one though.

Depending on the cause you may not get one
If it’s similar to our situation they definitely couldn’t say the board think the head is a bully and may sue .....
Or really any situation that has legal implications

Witchend · 05/03/2019 18:40

It sounds likely something happened.

However it could simply be that the chair has announced he's going, and it's led others who have been on a long time to think about it and decide actually they're ready to go too. They'd been perhaps wondering about it, and the others going has tipped them into a decision.
I've been in a situation for a hobby. The person who had been very key to the committee decided (or rather his wife decided Grin) that it was taking up a lot of their time and it was time to move on. Two years later there was only one person left who was still on the committee. The committee was different-as good, but different and made different decisions. There was definitely no row or disagreement or major issues at all.

Otoh when I was a junior member on a committee one person resigned and another promptly stood up to offer their resignation too. It was announced something like this:
"Chair and committee, if June is going, I will also offer my resignation. The committee will be much more boring for her not being there, and I have enjoyed the interest she has bought to the committee. However if she is not there, I feel my attendance will be no longer necessary as there is no one else who tries to push wild plans through the committee without using common sense first."
