It's something that I think would do my dd the world of good to work at, and wondered if anyone has had any experience with this kind of thing.

My brother has just traveled from Scotland to London to sign up. He's going in June to do photography (I think). Apparently it's a brilliant experience.

OddCat · 05/03/2019 17:14

Thanks, I was just wary it wasn't legit.

We have a friend that’s done it every year for the last 4 or so years and loves it. She’s a camp leader type person and really enjoys the experience

SweepTheHalls · 05/03/2019 18:08

Camp America have been around for years.

CommeDesPoissons · 05/03/2019 18:18

I did Camp America about (ahem) 30 years ago, so assuming nothing's changed, yes, they are legit.

hannah9176 · 05/03/2019 18:19

I went with camp leaders, similar idea but I'm sure I got paid like $100 more or something. This was about 8 years ago though. Best thing I've ever done. Would recommend it 100000%!

tadpole39 · 05/03/2019 18:53

I did camp America when I was 23, I’m now 55! It was in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia and I still have vivid memories. My niece went two years ago and I’m trying to persuade my dd!!!

miranda1511 · 05/03/2019 20:22

My stepdaughter did this a few years back and I know a few other young people that have too. No complaints at all.

SimplyPut · 05/03/2019 20:25

Genuinely some of the best times of my life!

HollowTalk · 05/03/2019 20:26

Camp America has been going for decades. Another thing for her to consider might be Eurocamp (for another time.)

OddCat · 05/03/2019 21:32

Thank you for all the replies. I'm desperate to help dd to find some purpose in life. She's not working, won't sign on , spends all her time dossing at her mates flat who also isn't working.

I've shown her the website and she's 'not 100% sure she'd like it '.

I've done Camp America twice now. Fab experience! Only thing I would suggest is look at Americamp or CCUSA, they do the exact same thing as Camp America with the same camps but seem to take less of a cut.

You'll usually end up getting paid more over the summer going with them instead of Camp America!

AnnaFiveTowns · 05/03/2019 21:49

I did Camp America when I was 24 (over 20 years ago) It was a brilliant experience - I would highly recommend it. It's all legit and very well organised. I'm hoping in a few years my own DC will fancy doing it.

DurhamDurham · 05/03/2019 21:52

My daughter did it one summer a few years ago and had a great time, she travelled around USA after camp had finished for a month and made some fab friends. She did say that the accommodation and food on the camp were very poor quality, lots of sweet carbs tiff which even she got sick of but overall would recommend it.
There's quite a bit of expense attached to getting there, they pay for flights but we had to part with quite a lot of money for various things before she went.

redredrobins · 05/03/2019 21:56

My DD met her american DH whilst they were both working at summer camp in Pennsylvania and now lives in the USA. Be aware it could totally change her life Smile

OddCat · 05/03/2019 22:00

@redredrobins if only . She needs to do something that's for sure.

redredrobins · 06/03/2019 00:28

I hope you can persuade her to go my DD actually went to work at camp for a few years running, she loved it and travelled around the US with others that she met at camp for a couple of weeks after each camp.
The camp owners liked to employ people from outside the US as they tend to be more mature than the American teenage workers (Brits, Aussies, Kiwis etc.). So your DD would probably have a good chance of getting the job. Do make sure the camp company has good insurance though, medical cover of course but also repatriation cover for serious injury or illness. As it varies from company to company (or at least it used to).

Pinkjellyfish · 06/03/2019 00:52

My DD is quite shy and quiet - would this still be a good experience for her do you think?

redredrobins · 06/03/2019 13:10

I think you need a confident teenager for them to benefit from working at summer camp, it's full on, responsible for a group of children during activities and overnight (they sleep in a cabin with there group and another counsellor). It is also hard work and long hours.

My DD worked 6 days then 1 day and night off (a group of the counsellors would stay at a hotel overnight on day off just to ensure they got a break).
But wow she matured a huge amount over the first summer!

BrieAndChilli · 06/03/2019 13:17

me and Dh did a summer (apr-oct) in the italian alps working for Acorn adventure which is similar to PGL. was an amazing time, did some amazing things and made some great friends. pay was rubbish but it was just spending money as all our travel food etc was paid for.

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 13:36

When I did a lifeguarding course a couple of years ago, one lad was doing it to get the qualification (internationally recognised) so he could do a stint with CA. The was another lady on the course who had done CA as part of a "gap-year-thing". She was renewing her qualification to be able to continue around the world. She said it was a lot of fun.

God I felt old ...

LollipopViolet · 06/03/2019 16:43

Yes, just over 3 years ago. It changed my life for the better.

Bowchicawowow · 06/03/2019 16:44

I have a young relative who is quiet and reserved and this literally changed his life. He is now so much more confident.

yearinyearout · 06/03/2019 16:55

My friend's DS has been with camp America and is going again this summer, he had a whale of a time.
