Baby climbing out of high chair

bluechameleon · 05/03/2019 13:31

DS2 is 13 months old and keeps trying to climb out of his high chair. We have the Ikea antilop which just has a waist strap. Would you:

  1. Buy a new high chair with shoulder straps.
  2. Buy a booster seat with shoulder straps.
  3. Use some sort of clever hack to attach shoulder straps to the antilop (and if so how!)

Buy some reins plus harness.
I haven't seen the high chair but usually there are clips to attach a harness to.

DC1 could get out of the antilop at a similar age but couldn't get out of other high chairs with just waist straps so I think it's something to do with the antilop straps themselves (I don't own one just used them at family/friends/out)

I would try wedging him in with a towel so he has less wiggle room first before buying something new.

My children had highchair with the shoulder straps but we're still able to manouvre their way out. If he wants to be out he'll be out in my experience. I got a small plastic table and little chair to prevent accidents.

I was going to suggest reins ive no idea what your high chair is like but if you could attach reins to a clip at the back he shouldn't get too far

NoKnit · 05/03/2019 13:43

Personally from my experience

1st child.= went to all measure to keep him strapped in highchair, can't remember when I gave up

2nd child. = doesn't want to sit in chair so obviously not hungry or wanting to eat. Let child get out

What is wrong with him getting out?

We attached a set of reins to the antilop waist strap for DS and it worked.

I got the booster seat for the table around that age. Still only a lap strap but fit more snugly than the antilop. Also didn’t have enough room to get his legs up for leverage due to the lip under the table

TriSkiRun99 · 05/03/2019 14:14

First child sat in high chair no problem then 2nd child nope, saw any kind of straps as mission to escape from! Just abandoned Hugh chair and put a booster cushion on “proper chair” like everyone but if they couldn’t sit nicely then no food simple...(tougher to enforce but the 2 options were high chair or “big” chair or no food) they are now 7 and sit on a wobble cushion at the table as still find it very hard to be “still” but we got there!

Wrybread · 05/03/2019 14:21

Mine tried that. I just popped a cushion behind them once they were in and they didn't have room to do it.

Cable tie him in!! [joking}

Grandson was a terror for this and his Dad duct taped him in once, still didn't work... Knowing what a touchy lot can be on here I will point out that no tape touched the child, just his clothes.

They gave up, it wasn't worth the risk of him falling, and he had a booster on an ordinary chair. It was very much a case of when there was nothing to fight against he stayed in his seat.. it was no challenge/fun any more.

Get a little table and chair instead?
