Is this ok for a lunch box?

I always struggle with lunch boxes for the kids because they prefer things like soup etc but I'm trying!

They are 5 and 7. Is this in the region of OK?

Cheese and lettuce sandwich on wholemeal bread.
Little tub of strawberries.
A rice cake.
Little tub of popcorn (half each of a 63 calorie crisp packet size).
An apple.

Take a look at Bento boxes op ( sorry I don't know how to link Blush ) they are fascinating!
Dd is 8 and takes packed lunch Monday-Thursday as only likes school dinner on Friday as it's fish and she is obsessed with them. She watches YouTube videos of them for ideas. I'm going to get her one.

Zoflorabore · 05/03/2019 13:08

Sorry she is obsessed with the Bento boxes not fish Grin

flumpybear · 05/03/2019 13:15

Sounds ok - mine went with a little less healthy:-
Sandwich
Cheese and crackers
Apple
Jelly
Crisps (baked ones)
Club biscuit

This covers a snack, lunch plus she's home late as at after school netball so needs a quick fix beforehand

That's fine. My DD4.5 has:-

1 x cheese and whatever filling (Branston pickle, tomato etc) sandwich or egg mayo and cress
tub of whatever fruit is around - be it strawberries, raspberries, grapes etc
yogurt
muesli bar
bar of crisps (Pom Bear or Twiglets)

MadameDD · 05/03/2019 13:20

flumpybear - I sometimes put a Penguin or Kit Kat (2 finger) instead of the muesli bar.

School seems ok with both options.

MotherWol · 05/03/2019 14:43

You could do cheese scones/cheese muffin for a bit of variety (just basic plain muffin recipe, reduce the sugar slightly and add some grated cheese). How about things like Babybel/Dairylea and crackers? Or some cherry tomatoes/snack veg (Lidl do tiny cucumbers).

MadameDD · 05/03/2019 14:53

MotherWol

I sometimes add BabyBels and Dairylea with breadsticks. I draw the line at DairyLea Lunchables though!

I also sometimes put a mini pepparami or full sized one.

Mini quiches (Higgidy) with potato salad is another win win, or mini quorn eggs with potato salad.

My 10 year old has..

A chicken wholemeal roll
Cucumber/carrot sticks and houmous
Mini cheddars
Two finger kit kat

He's difficult to feed as he has a hypothalamic obesity so battles with his weight, but he also gets particularly hungry.

We generally have a good healthy cooked meal for tea and he generally eats plenty of fruit and veg

thank fuck for that, that your 10 year old has a sort of similar menu to my DD.

Once I dared to show the lunchbox to another DM (one of the 'healthy eating brigade) and it had Walkers Crisps, Mini Mars Bar but the rest was a sandwich, apple, crudites etc and she looked at me like I was feeding DD crack! I'd only just come back from 6 weeks summer holiday - stupidly booked to return just a few days before term time started so just had time to nip to the local shop to get 'supplies'.

SadOtter · 05/03/2019 20:58

Sounds fine, just be prepared to occasionally find an apple with one bite taken out of it because for some reason children cannot look at their pack lunch and think I've had enough, they must take a bite out of the apple first.

As someone who does lunch duty though, please don't send in things like cheese strings, frubes, pepperami etc unless your child can either open it themselves or will ask for help opening it before chewing the end of the packet. I am happy to open things but I really hate being handed dribble covered packets.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 05/03/2019 21:10

Sounds fine to me.
My eldest (8) has a pack-up for school and tomorrow will have:

  • 2x corned beef and brown sauce sandwiches on thick white bread with lettuce and tomatoes
  • fromage frais
  • an apple
  • a little pot of raisins
  • a mini cathedral city cheese thing
  • a breakfast bar

The sandwich changes every day but the rest is always the same!

Brightpinktulip · 05/03/2019 21:29

Yes I think so, my daughter is 4 and her pack lunch is

Cheese or ham sandwich
Small kinder bar/fruit bar/quavers
Pot of fruit - berries normally
Small yoghurt

If she is staying late at the childminders (i pick her up 3.30 most days) then I will add in a small tub of tuna or pesto pasta/boiled egg.

She tends to pick a lot and won't eat all of this.

blackcoffeeinbed · 05/03/2019 21:32

My boys lunch boxes...

A sandwich/wrap/crackers or homemade tuna and pasta.
Crisps or breadsticks
Pepperami or mini cheese's
Yoghurt or jelly
Melon wedge or pineapple stick
A carton of juice
On Friday they get a treat like a mini roll or chocolate biscuit

I think as long as our kids are given what they will eat so they do eat at school it's up to each individual what they contain. I remember helping on a school trip once and when It came to lunch time one little boy we were sat with only had half a jam sandwich, a chocolate mousse and 2 custard cream biscuits! Since that day I've always told myself that my boys are lucky to have what they get in their lunch boxes and just meals in general really. If your lunch boxes are better than that then you're doing it right!

AllGoodDogs · 05/03/2019 21:35

Sounds fine to me!

My 6 year old has a butter sandwich, a bag of pom bears and a penguin. Every day,
fussy fucker

10 year old has the pom bears and penguin, plus a carrot and satsuma in lieu of a sandwich.

Tempjob · 05/03/2019 21:42

My 8 year old had today:

2x Nairns oatcakes
Babybel
Small box raisins
Banana
A mini meringue

She always begs me to give her a small packed lunch as she doesn't have a big appetite at lunch and just wants to play with her friends rather than being left to eat her lunch

WorraLiberty · 05/03/2019 21:51

If they're active it sounds a bit light on calories to me. Mine are only 3 and 5 but would be hungry on that, they'd have a full packet of crisps and a cake (mini roll or mr Kipling type slice as well).

If they're not full up after

A sandwich
A tub of strawberries.
A rice cake.
A small tub of popcorn
An apple.

How much are they going to need to fill them in a couple of years? They'll be eating more than the adults, surely? Confused

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 05/03/2019 22:25

Sounds fine to me, if your kids eat then that’s it.
Dd had pot o pasta with cheese, grapes, choob, quavers and juice
DS had cocktail sausages, mango, tub of jelly, cherry juice, Crisps and a squares bar.

WrongKindOfFace · 05/03/2019 22:25

Rice cakes and popcorn aren’t filling though. I swear I’m always hungrier after eating them!

I bung in crackers or oatcakes instead of rice cakes.

Pinkbells · 06/03/2019 07:44

We eat a 'proper' meal in the evening with loads of veggies etc and if they take in carrot sticks or anything remotely healthy they'll get the piss ripped out of them
My son says that no-one else takes little bags of carrots, raisins, etc and is always nagging me to put unhealthy things like sausage rolls in. Aargh, anything healthy gets brought back home again, how to keep them healthy but street cred?? He is at secondary school next year.

Pinkbells · 06/03/2019 07:46

Typical lunch for my 8 year old:
Tuna wholemeal wrap
Carrot sticks
Apple
Raisins
Cheesestring
Yoghurt
Small piece of homemade cake or flapjack
Carton of juice

Pinkbells · 06/03/2019 07:47

I like the idea of the oatcakes, will see if my eldest will eat those!

PrimeraVez · 06/03/2019 07:53

My (just) 3 year old has:

  • Bottle of water
  • Sandwich (usually cheese)
  • Small box of raisins
  • Banana
  • Yoghurt
  • Ella's Kitchen cereal bar/madeleine/slice of banana bread
Youngandfree · 06/03/2019 07:53

Today mine have a:
Yogurt
Tub of jelly (small)
Ham sandwich
Peach
Tangerine
A homemade flapjack.

Happyspud · 06/03/2019 07:57

Mine gets a sandwich, a fruit, a yogurt and a biscuit/crackers/something baked.

DinosApple · 06/03/2019 09:04

Mine have a cheese wrap, veg sticks (celery, tomatoes and cucumbers), some salami slices, mini soreen loaf, an apple and a frube.

Sometimes they have crisps or a cake or chocolate bar instead of the soreen.
