Is there any chance veganism is on the wane?

Counterintuitively I find it's really limiting my food options when eating out, i really am not a fan of sweet potatoes or cheese substitutes. Sad

So eggs Benedict gets no icon, bread and cheese, no icon

Eggs benedict contains ham and the cheese may contain animal rennet so not actually be veggie at all.

I've been veggie for more than half my life and I haven't found what you're saying to be the case. Conversely, I never used to bother with fake meat but recently enjoyed a facon double cheeseburger at a local vegan joint.

I wonder what's in vegan fish and chips?

Usually battered tofu and chips.

I did also once have a lovely (but clearly not vegan) battered halloumi and chips.

MitziK · 04/03/2019 21:18

It's usually sold in big catering bags for next to nothing and then put on plates for around fifteen quid, too. Cheaper than fish, but sold at over double the price because it's vegan.

avacados that's my whole point, if menus only show vegan options and everything else is just for omnivores, there's no way of telling if something is suitable for vegetarians.

Halloumi and chips is the business.Grin

Ive been veggie for 25 years and I've noticed this too op. Shops, brands and various cafes etc do a vegan range to cover the non meat eaters so no cheese or dairy. It does end up limiting your options a bit and I probably eat out less now. Overall I do support the rise of veganism even if it does limit my options.

anniehm · 04/03/2019 22:01

The problem is that even within vegetarians they vary in strictness, here "pure vegetarian" is common which means no eggs but dairy is fine. Some cheese is veggie but not all, so some people avoid it unless they can check the package. Dd is veggie and hasn't complained, she generally gravitates to halloumi

Anything vegan is also vegetarian. Confused

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 04/03/2019 22:06

Agreed there is less veggie choice in favour of vegan and an abundance of stuff pretending to be real meat - seen some mince which had the worm like texture and red colour of real meat. So realistic I couldn’t buy it. Bleurgh

I've been ranting about this to dh recently - glad its not just me. The rise in veganism has definitely lead to a decrease in the standard of vegetarian choices. Where you would have had a couple of vegetarian options on a menu, now you have one vegetarian and one vegan - I miss the eggs, cheese, cream and generally indulgent stuff I like to have when I eat out. It feels like going back to the 1990s when I could only expect 1 veggie option. I know I could choose the vegan dish but sometimes they are so worthy and not that delicious.

Slurpy · 04/03/2019 22:15

Yep, I'm finding this too and it's cheesing me off (pun intended). Even bloody Pizza Express has changed the pizza I've been ordering for the last 15 years or so to have vegan cheese. Though they were happy to sub for proper mozza.

donajimena · 04/03/2019 22:22

I am fed up too. I prefer vegetarian food over meat (I do still eat some) and yep! Its vegan everywhere. I have noticed a resurgence in veg lasagne as a veggie option which is all there was on the menu when I was a proper vegetarian in the late 80s to the mid 90's. I don't want to revert to that. I've served my time with that!

MsJaneAusten · 04/03/2019 22:26

I’m confused. Why are you vegetarian? How can you possibly be angry about restaurants offering cruelty free options?

MorningsEleven · 04/03/2019 22:33

I agree that veggie options are all becoming quinoa and falafel based. I want a cheese sandwich and cake that's not made of hamster bedding, dates and avocado.

SpaceCadet4000 · 05/03/2019 00:28

Move to small town America! We were really excited as the restaurant by our apartment said they were going to offer more meat-free plant-based options. The menu launched this weekend and every single dish has cheese or eggs. None of them are really configured so the cheese/eggs could be removed and still constitute a meal.

dangermouseisace · 05/03/2019 07:59

Nope, it’s not on the wane, as lots of people avoid dairy now, even if they are not vegetarian.

Where I live the vegan option is usually crap ie the vegetarian option, without the cheese, for the same cost 😡.

AnnaMagnani · 05/03/2019 09:16

Definitely not on the wane. As a meat eater who likes vegetarian and vegan food, I've been pleased to see options in restaurants that aren't the dreaded mushroom risotto and goat's cheese tart.

Depends where you go though. In my MIL's town the vegan option will be the vegetarian option with the halloumi removed Confused - so just leaves then???
