Best cities for a solo break

DP is currently unable to take leave so I'm considering doing a 3-4 day city break somewhere. I've never done one before but am fairly comfortable doing things on my own so hopefully it'll be a good time. I love good food and museums and galleries and just people-watching generally.

Any ideas? Nowhere too far away as it's only a short amount of time but a couple of hours flight is fine.

I am hugely envious as I love to go away on my own but am tied to home at present! If going now it may be a bit chilly in most places in Europe though.

Top of my personal list would probably be Amsterdam: lots to see including excellent art galleries and museums, only 20 minutes by train from Schipol airport and the trains come right into the centre of Amsterdam, easy to walk around or take trams, friendly people who all speak excellent English and easy to take a day trip by train to several other places, including Delft and The Hague if you want more. Some suggestions here

Bruges

Amsterdam is lovely, I really enjoyed going there a few years ago but I'd probably prioritise somewhere I haven't been before.

I've heard great things about Bruges!

Berlin has lots to see/do that is fine alone.

Budapest is fabulous. Loads to see and do and great for walking around. Food and beer is good and very cheap!

Rome. It’s great at this time of year as much quieter. Very easy to mooch round by yourself and no problems in restaurants either.

Pisa, Nice, Marseilles, Venice, Cologne, Amsterdam, or Madrid would be my recommendations by plane. All have decent transport and plenty to see/do and very walkable.

If you prefer Eurostar/train, then Paris, Brugge, Manchester or Birmingham.

Cork! Entertaining city and with a car you have access to all of County Kerry. Great landscapes, food, places to stay. Perfect road trip.

Edinburgh! Only no amount of time would be long enough ...

Kirkwall! Stealth fabulousness. Tiny but it has the most magnificent cathedral. Endless walking. Orkney is stupendous.

I did Brussels alone and enjoyed it

i did three days on my own in Edinburgh and had a whale of a time loads to do, i stayed in the travel lodge just off the royal mile, so i had brekkie there, did one day of all the museums so all free, mary king street and a couple of ghost walks so in a group , bought food to bring back to the hotel and a couple of good books for in the room at night so i wasnt bored on my own

I'd second Madrid. Really friendly, loads of museums and galleries and a great vibe.

stepup123 · 04/03/2019 16:34

Another vote for Rome, it's like an open air museum!
Very easy to explore and gorgeous food!

caperplips · 04/03/2019 16:41

I would suggest :
Prague
Krakow
Lisbon
Madrid
Palma
Budapest
Hamburg
Lyon
Bruges

Enjoy where ever you decide to go!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 04/03/2019 19:03

Definitely Bruges. Although Ghent is just as lovely.
