Coin collecting

Anyone here collect coins?

I've been collecting the peter rabbit 50ps from the start for my Dds which then turned into various 50p collections and last week I found husbands stash of change collected over 10yrs with £800 in, all sorted correctly and I've found a few rare'ish coins, some old pound coins and £2 coins.

Anyway, are coins likely to increase in value much? Couple of the £2 ones are listed on ebay for £8-£14 with bids on, my thought is to keep them for dds with my 50ps but husband doesn't think their value will increase much more and I should just sell them?

I honestly don't know about this type of thing. Also is there another way of selling them without ebay? I got annoyed after selling baby clothes on ebay as after ebay and PayPal fees were taken off I wasn't left with much?

There are only a few 50ps worth keeping hold of, as most of them have been mass produced and will pop up all over the place.

The one I know for certain is worth looking out for is the Kew Gardens 50p

Pinkyyy · 04/03/2019 07:42

I think the Peter rabbit ones are becoming increasingly common. Isn't it a lot to do with their condition?

Huntawaymama · 04/03/2019 07:49

Yeah it's not the 50p I'm really talking about, I collect the PR ones for my Dds because I like them but I know they're not rare.

I've got a couple of rare £2 Coins and old £1 coins which I think I'd just sell unless I thought there value would increase much

I can't see the value of the £2 or £1s rising much more than they are at now, I would sell them and treat your daughters.

DSis does it , she’s autistic and it’s one of her ‘things’ - she has a lot of crap (50p’s) but she also has a huge amount of royal family stuff - huge £5 coins etc . She also has dozens of sixpences, penny farthings, shillings and quite a few Victorian pennies as well . I think she has more foreign than anything else though - I’m a student and have lived with people from all over the world so she’s lucky in that respect , as soon as I mention her hobby I’ve ended up with lots of loose change for her . Think she’s also got foreign coins that are pre euro and a couple that are from countries during periods of war , or that have changed names and that .

Absolutely no idea what her collection is worth - I suspect a lot less than she thinks but she enjoys it so that’s the main thing . I don’t think we’ve ever looked into it in terms of value tbh, probably should but then I’d worry if it was worth something as she’s in supported accommodation . It’s an interesting hobby though . Sister loved showing my granny and her teachers as they were able to make a connection over it in a way they couldn’t really otherwise .

RE selling them - Facebook usually has selling pages in abundance for local area ? Some specialist shops as well depending on what you have ... but Oxfam had about 200 coins my last check which suggests that there’s not much value at all unfortunately . So would probably just sell off anything modern for whatever you can get .

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/03/2019 08:07

They need to be in uncirculated mint condition to have any value to be honest. It's pretty much the case for any coin of any age.
I have a George the fourth Maundy coin but it's been rendered virtually worthless because it's had a hole drilled through it to make it into a pendant.

Huntawaymama · 04/03/2019 12:35

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just sell them, I've got two old pound coins which I know are very rare and I think I'll keep with my 50ps but I'll try and earn some pennies for a zoo trip with the rest. Thanks

I collect 50ps and I'm on the look out for the A-Z 10ps.

Before I started collecting them I had a Kew garden 50p in my change but spent it not realising it could be worth something.

One day I was watching something and they mentioned the off side rule 50p being scarce. I went to a shop a few days later and was given the off side rule 50p so that started my collection off. I'm not so much bothered about them being worth anything (although I would sell at the right price!) but I just enjoy finding different ones in my change so I don't buy from the royal mint or anything like that.

Pinkprincess1978 · 04/03/2019 22:08

My DH collects 50ps - he buys them direct from the royal mint so pays £3.99 a coin but he gets everyone they release now. He says his Issac Newton one is worth £15 now. He sent really doing it to make money but because he likes it. He has promised it to our DD when he dies 😆

Longdistance · 04/03/2019 22:15

I’ve got loads of different 50p and £2 coins.
Paddington
Peter rabbit x2
Benjamin bunny
Tom kitten
Johnson dictionary
Public libraries
2012 Olympic coins. I think swimming and a Paralympic handball.
£2 slavery coin, Charles Dickens and DNA.

Sorry, I’m a nerd 🤓

Ouch. Shock

Huntawaymama · 05/03/2019 09:22

I've put 3 of my £2 ones on ebay to test the water and see if they sell.

I definitely don't collect the 50ps for the money I just enjoy it. I thought I'd collect the PR for my Dds, I just need two Jemima puddleducks, a squirrel nutkin and a peter rabbit and then I'll have two sets of 2016, I've got two sets of 2017 and nearly completed 2018 sets. My brother manages a shop and has given me a few 2018 ones as they've passed through his till.

I've got an issac newton one, is so pretty though I'm definitely not selling it 😂

I've also told husband I'll collect the 10ps but just so I can make my Dds names with them. He thinks I'm a geek but I enjoy it

@Huntawaymama

The Jemima Puddleducks are quite rare (I believe the mintage on those to be around the same number as the Kew Gardens coins!), I have one but my cousin who also collects doesn't and we are struggling to find them. I have plenty of the 2016 & 2017 PR sets so would be happy to swap what you need to complete these with any of the 2018 ones you have spare?

The Isaac Newton is fairly rare too. I would keep that, along with the Paddington Bear set. Also, there is an Olympic coin with the offside rule that is quite rare. They are generally worth a few quid each at the moment.

The Gruffalo and The Snowman are only available to purchase and are £3.99 each + p&p, but they do combine postage if you order more than one coin at a time.

The 10p's are like rocking horse shit. I've been collecting them since they came out last year and only have 11 of the 26.

Change Checker is a great place to find out mintage of coins etc, so you can see how rare they are. You can buy coins from the Westminster Collection, they also have a page on Amazon.

HTH xx

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 05/03/2019 09:39

Oh, and the Kew Gardens 50ps can fetch as much as £80! Obviously this will depend on the condition xx
