Malta holiday ideas

I've been tasked with finding a 'cheap but nice' family holiday in Malta for a family member.
I'm too embarrassed to let them know I've not been abroad since my honeymoon in 2001 and have no idea where to start. It's for one adult one 14 year old and one 11 year old and i have no idea why this has fallen to me, but it has. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? (they have very little money so it might just be too expensive anyway?)

We went to Malta 4 years ago, we went in March and got flights, transfers and B&B in a hotel for a week for £120 each. The hotel was dated, but clean.
Flights we did through sky scanner, hotel was via a lot of googling.
The buses are dead cheap and make it easy to get aroundthe island. Going out of season would bring down costs massively.

Wow! That's a brilliant bargain. Would you mind pm'ing me the name of the hotel please? never heard of Skyscanner - will Google.

I've been looking at air bnb in Malta. Lots of choice. Agree re pp, buses are great.

I honestly can’t remember the name of the hotel but we stayed in Bugibba, lots of things do do, boat trips, aquarium.

Ahhh, my favourite place (off for the 6th time at Easter Grin)
Take a look at AirMalta flights as they include luggage, which is a bonus. We always stay in the Buggiba/Qawra area. It’s general cheaper than the capital Valletta or St. Julians. Buggiba is not huge but has a good selection of bars, restaurants and a McDonald’s. Qawra is a mix of residential and hotels - not the most glamorous of places but we like it

Ok. Am i better to look at Air B&B (never used) / sep hotel / flights, or a package do you think? (I have left the country before, honestly... :)

If look at both OP, weigh up the prices.

StripeyChina · 03/03/2019 22:34

Oooh, thanks for extra info. Is it cheap to eat out, please?
(I am thinking it will be pasta / pizza / icecream type of cuisine?)

There’s a right mix of places to eat, small cafes to big upmarket restaurants. There were lots of cheap and cheerful places near us as it was a touristy place.

We book flights and hotel through Travel Republic, so ATOL protected if anything goes wrong. We’ve stayed at the Soreda Hotel a couple of times. Got a rooftop pool and a great indoor pool if the weather isn’t brilliant. They also have two-bedroom apartments which are huge (2 bathrooms plus a lounge!). It’s not a modern, new hotel (think circa 1980s decor) but we didn’t care Grin
