Erdnuss flips - like peanutty wotsits, and more addictive than crack. Our German family always bring carloads of them over when they come to visit.

I'm in Bayern and we've learnt how to make Münchner Schnitzel - before you bread the meat you put a layer of Senf (sweet mustard that goes with Weißwurst) and horseradish sauce. Dip in the egg and cover in Paniermehl - a very fine breadcrumb. It's delicious!

This thread has made me realise how much I love the food here!

I love Semmelknödel as they're not as fatty as normal Knödel and go with all the lovely pork dishes.

Our local bakery is fantastic, amazing Breze and the bread selection is amazing.

Today is Faschingsdienstag, we went to our local parade and then for a doughnut - Krapfen in the south and Berliners up north!

I notice that no-one has recommended Spezi.
That's a drink mixed from half cola and half orange Fanta. DS just ordered one.
The Germans also mix cola and beer.

beer mixed with lemon soda (alster or radler) is rather refreshing in summer.

I haven't rtft, but a pp did mention the German quality standards for food/drink. And most importantly wine.

All German wine is given a rating, you should look out for Qualitätswein or Prädikatswein on the label. The latter is higher quality. This also applies to German wine sold in the UK, but this is not reflected in the supermarket price. In fact you can get Prädikatswein for a very good price in the supermarket as German wine isn't fashionable. In fact, we often find it cheaper than Qualitätswein as the big name German brands for exporting wine (eg Dr Loosen) mainly make Q wine, but the brand is better known in the UK so supermarkets charge more.

In fact Morrisons frequently does a nice Kendermanns P reisling on offer for £6.

Has any one mentioned obastla (not sure of the spelling). You get it on a brotzeit. It's like mashed Camembert, paprika and chopped onions - it's one thing I always wish I could find in the UK!!

Spaghetti eis (ice cream that looks like a plate of spaghetti bolognese) is one of my favourite memories of Germany.

SALAT - Please order a Salad Teller when eating out! It's basically a plate with salad BUT oh my god you have never experienced anything like it!! You get different things (tomato, cucumber carrots, leaves,.... all mixed with the most amazing individual dressing!
