British gift for American wedding

JaretsGirlfren · 03/03/2019 09:23

I’m going to a wedding in May, the wedding is in America and everyone there will be American apart from me. DP is best man and we are giving a money gift but I would really like to give something super british also, just a small something that will travel with me.

Not after anything really flashy or expensive, just something very british to go alongside the money.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks Smile

Most American women, married or not, use Ms.

We eat toast hot from the toaster and quickly buttered. We don't usually eat soft boiled eggs at all. If we do, they are cracked and scooped out of the shell. For sopping up egg yolk, we eat eggs fried sunny side up or over easy or more rarely poached.

Mr and Mrs mugs are fine if they are definitely going to use Mr and Mrs, but many choose not to because the sexism of women being expected to change name/title and not men. So if they've decided against Mrs they wouldn't want a mug with it on. If I was given anything with Mrs on it would be going straight to the charity shop.

Brit with American DH here.
We've found items from the London Transport Museum shop are quite good for gifts:

Also Fortnum & Mason teabags, biscuits or jams (not cheap tho'!)
www.fortnumandmason.com/

Alternatively you could just go with some good old Yorkshire tea Grin
(Could be a bit on the strong side compared the US floor sweepings teabags Wink)

Emma Bridgewater does personalised name mugs - an ad came up the other day.

You can take sealed store bought tea bags just declare them as such. I take and declare store bought candy ( of all types ) and teabags ( Yorkshire Gold ) every year to the US of A. Never been a problem at all. Dairy is a no though. I like to gift Cornishware.

ElloBrian · 03/03/2019 15:26

Presumably you’re not allowed to take cheese in because of the riots that would result if Americans realised how bad the abomination they call cheese is.

(London Transport Museum stuff is a great idea btw!)

Asked American DP about the egg cup debate, just gonna throw this in here (whistles)

Years ago I was invited to my friend's wedding in the US. I had met her and her family when I worked there. But it was before the internet and very difficult to access their wedding list from over here. She loved (and still does!) baking so I took with me a British china sandwich plate, large enough for a cake. I visited the family fairly recently and was delighted to see that they still use the plate for cookies or cakes. Mine was just about the only present given on the day - so much was sent by their family and friends from the wedding list and delivered after the honeymoon!

I dont know how well you know the couple and their interests. Could you share some more details?

Oops I seem to have left a tiny photo of us on the pic outs self to anyone with amazing eyesight

Sponge I’ve never met the couple, this is the first time I’m visiting America but DP has known the groom to be most of their lives. He’s of little use and keeps suggesting pickled onion Monster Munch Hmm Grin

My American inlaws love anything with the Royal warrant insignia. British gift's they've enjoyed include fancy umbrellas, his and hers wellies from Joules, a Whittards teapot with the Coldstream guards on it (they never used it for tea though...), things from Harrods or Fortnum and Mason and Laphoigh whiskey.

spongedog · 03/03/2019 18:29

Monster Munch it is then! At least it's a light present in weight terms for the flight!

JaretsGirlfren · 03/03/2019 18:45

Spacecadet ooh interesting ideas thank you! Are umbrellas British?

Sponge yes seems so can’t admit to DP that he had a good idea though Grin
