Is it safe to eat raw mushrooms?

DD loves mushrooms in a salad, but only likes them raw. I've never really thought about it, but a friend said today that they shouldn't be eaten raw due to toxins?? Have I been unwittingly poisoning DD for years?? 😳

The standard mushrooms you buy in supermarkets are totally fine to eat raw.

Some varieties do need cooking as they make you ill when eaten raw. Both Waitrose and Sainsbury’s have Do Not Eat Raw warnings on their exotic/speciality mushroom packs, but not on their button mushrooms.

kaladoo Can't eat raw elderberries??? I mean, why would you beyond childhood , they are pretty minging, but they haven't killed anybody I know.

You should try it @Kpo58 , they're delicious. The only problem is that once you know this, you have to factor in a 'nibbling allowance' for mushrooms you're chopping up to cook with.

I prefer raw ones too.

But don't gather and eat them from the ground, unless you really know what you're doing: some ordinary-looking ones are deadly.
