Would you speak to the current occupants at a place you're looking to rent?

This past 2 years I've moved out of multiple failed houseshares for various reasons (student). I have ASD and to keep it brief, my main issue is that I am really sensitive to noise and struggle to live with other people. It's been a massive cause of stress for me.

I am terrified of going into another stressful situation again because of how overwhelming these situations have been and it's been going on for so long I'm sick of it.

The letting agency told me a flat I viewed is soundproofed but I'm not sure I should just take their word for it, it's not mentioned anywhere on the listing either.

I've never considered this before but after so many failed attempts WIBU to speak to the people living there currently to ask how much they can hear from the other flats? Last time I lived in a flat it was bad, I could hear them stirring a cup of tea so clearly it sounded like it was in the same room as me (as well as everything else).

Have any of you been in a similar situation - not able to really afford your own place but struggle to live with other people? What did you do?

Thanks in advance :)

I always try to speak to the direct neighbours and the current occupier if there is one. And sometimes even other neighbours in the street. I have never had anyone mind talking to me about it.

The sound levels in different flats can vary sooo much. I also try to always get the top flat so there is no one above.

The other thing that I found useful was having some hypnotherapy sessions that reduced my sensitivity to noise that means now when I hear things my body stays relaxed.

Thank you, if I don't find somewhere better I will try and speak to them.

Agh I hate being oversensitive [santa]

You could always ask. I am hypersensitive to noise as well which is much worse when I am stressed or tired; something to bear in mind is that the current; occupants' "acceptable" may still be noisy to you - but you don't have anything to lose by asking still.

Yeah you can ask.

Modern flats have better soundproofing that conversion. Top floor will obviously redice noise possibilities as will getting a corner flat.

Definitely ask tenants. Lettings agents tend to lie about stuff.
