Talk to me about laser eye surgery.

I'm coming up to 34 and im long sighted. Need to wear glasses for everything. I've looked into laser eye surgery but details online recommend waiting till 35 as long sighted and this is when the prescription tends to settle.

Was at optician yesterday and she said they usually recommend to get it done asap if you want it done. There's also the thought there could be complications and its not a permanent solution. I could end up having to wear glasses again in 2 years time.

Any one had it done, particularly for long sightedness ? Was there any issues ? Have you had to go back to wearing glasses ?

I've never considered it as I find contact lenses are a great option without the need for surgery.

Just be aware though that laser surgery doesn't correct the need for reading glasses associated with age. Even if you get perfect vision with laser you could still need reading glasses from age 40+.

I had it done 15 years ago. Best thing i ever did. I still have perfect vision.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 03/03/2019 01:11

Same as above. Had it done 14 years ago and still great vision.

I had it done for short-sightedness 15 years ago, best thing I ever did. I was - 7 in both eyes, don't know about long sight though?

Rhodes2015again · 03/03/2019 09:51

I really want it done. I had a consultation at optical express in January. I’m short sighted -5 in both and they quoted me £5490! It’s a lot. I’m still deciding.

Roominmyhouse · 03/03/2019 14:38

I had lasek about 6 years ago and also agree it was a good decision. I love not needing glasses/contacts anymore. And my eyesight has barely changed since then, I know I’ll get she related changes but even if I only get 10 years from this I’d do it again.

Roominmyhouse · 03/03/2019 14:38

Age related changes, not she!

EdWinchester · 03/03/2019 14:40

Best thing my husband ever did. He was very short-sighted; -6 and -4.

I would have it done (-2) but I am too chicken.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 03/03/2019 15:37

Anyone had lens replacement? Is this a better option? I know it’s more expensive.

BayandBlonde · 03/03/2019 15:42

I'm shorted sighted -4.75 in both eyes.

I had laser surgery on both my retinas a few years ago, but it put me off ever having lasers burnt into my eyes again. It may not be a similar procedure but I would never go through it again.

I will stick with my faithful contacts and glasses Smile

f83mx · 03/03/2019 16:51

I’m going to get it done as soon as I can save the cash, was quoted 4K. I’m similar age to you and was told sooner you get it done better but may well need reading glasses in future - I know two people who’ve had it done and rave about it.

Stinkytoe · 03/03/2019 16:54

I had mine done around 3 years ago. I found the procedure pretty horrific, I think I swore at my poor doctor. I’m not great at people touching my eyes and it’s veey claustrophobic.

Despite the experience of the surgery I’d recommend it to anyone. It’s fantastic not wearing glasses and being able to see.

huntinghighandlow · 03/03/2019 16:58

DP has his done about 5 years ago he was late 40s and long sighted. Very quick procedure. He is now 54 and thinks it might need doing again in a few years (they redo for free) My son had his done a few years ago early 20s as he hated putting in his contact lenses but too vain for glasses! He has perfect vision and recommends it highly. Sadly, my short-sightedness is too bad to have it done Sad

OKBobble · 03/03/2019 17:08

I had mine done 15 years ago -7 in each eye. Doesn't need doing again. I did lots of research and went with the company that rejected the most people with my prescription. It was the best money I ever spent and if I did wake up tomorrow needing it done again I would not hesitate!

groundcontroltomontydon · 03/03/2019 17:09

Had Lasik at Moorfields when I was 34 to correct short-sightedness (-5). Procedure is weird but no worse than a contact lens fitting. Not having to wear glasses was fantastic. However, the effects were short-lived (3-4 yrs) and my corrected vision isn't as good now as it was pre Lasik. The aftercare only extended to the month immediately after the procedure. I asked about a repeat procedure but would have had to pay for everything again.

Sallyspoons · 03/03/2019 17:12

-9 and -10, I had it done 14 years ago. My eyes slightly deteriorated and wear glasses to drive but don’t need them for anything else. A miracle for me.

bumpertobumper · 03/03/2019 22:53

I was told by the optician that it cant be done for long sighted. But sounds like some of you have had it...

purplepinkpurple · 04/03/2019 01:00

Thanks for your reply folks :) some of the quotes you have been given are a lot more than I expected :O

Those that are long sighted - do you were glasses all the time too ? I wish there was a way to help your eyes (other than laser eye or glasses) as i feel once you start wearing glasses, your eyes get worse as they rely so heavily on the prescription

I did mine about 5 years ago, I was living overseas and it was £375 an eye. However we are talking the other side of the world here so not like a quick hop to Europe

It wasn’t the most enjoyable experience however it’s was virtually life changing for me. I couldn’t have left the house without glasses on I was SO shortsighted
