How does slimming world work?
Do they help you with diet? Or is it just a weigh in place? How much does it cost ? Do you have to go every week? And are you charged for it if you don't go? Seriously need a kick up the arse I'm 2 stone over weight and need to lose some instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself haha!! Xx

Each session has a weigh in- your weight is private, only losses are shared at my group. We also have a chat about new food ideas, recipes are shared, plans to overcome problems (such as a birthday party or a boozy night out) are formulated with the consultant.

Next week we are doing a good sharing night. Everyone brings a dish (all food which can be eaten in unlimited quantities) and we share ideas.

You get a book which gives you a list of syns per helping of food. You need to stick to your limit each day. For example, 8 olives are 1.5 syns, a gin and slimline tonic is 4 syns (I think).

Littletreasure2017 · 02/03/2019 19:18

Thankyou, how much is each session and do you have to attend every week? Xx

4.95/week, yes you get charged for not attending, but only up to 15 quid max (2 weeks plus rejoin fee).

You can also pay in blocks, so pay for 5 weeks, get 6, or pay for 10 weeks get 12

Yes, you need to pay each week-,if you don’t go you’ll still be charged (so you may as well go really!). I pay for a block at a time, £50 for 12 weeks. I think it’s £5 a week if you pay weekly.

There always seem to be offers to reduce the cost either through magazines or online.

The basic premise is speed, free, healthy extras and syns. Speed are things like strawberries, satsumas, broccoli, mushrooms etc. Free are stuff like lean meat, rice, pasta, potatoes etc. Healthy extras are bread or cereal, milk and cheese etc. Syns are for anything else, eg bread, jam, chocolate, wine. You get 15syns a day.

The emphasis is on homecooked food and food prep with very little leeway for grabbing food on the go

It's a meeting. You go and weigh, no one else sees your number. You sit in a circle and clap at each others weight losses, sometimes sharing tips. It can drag on a bit but there's no requirement to stay.

You are charged for a missed week yes, I think the weekly fee is 4.95. if you tell the leader beforehand you aren't charged, or if you attend another class that same week, but otherwise you're charged.

It does work. I'll be honest, I prefer WW. I think it's just luck of the draw with local groups. I know some leaders are fab. My group focused more on weight loss than healthy habits, eg eating a whole tub of low fat ice cream is ok and you don't need to exercise, and you shouldn't be hungry - and praising members for eating an entire pack of ham as a snack. That is just one group though.

It depends on the kind of person you are. Would you rather eat plenty of food, but the majority of it be healthy foods, and really limit your treats? Eg you can have banana on toast, pasta salad, curry and rice in the day but unless you fancy using tomorrow's syns you can't really have a cheese topped roll or Costa muffin. All duets say nothings banned btw but that isn't realistic. Or would you rather have the Costa muffin and coffee for breakfast then have fruit for lunch and salad for tea? It all depends on your personality and habits. I rather cutting back to have my treat, but others may not.

It also depends on your lifestyle. I found it impossible on SW to just pop to Tesco and grab a sandwich, and as I'm always on the go and haven't the space to take lunch with me, and also never know when I'll have chance to eat or the circumstances, being able to eat on the go is important. But if I remained at one office all day, with planned breaks and little deviation, then that wouldn't be so important.

It really depends on you , I would give it a go and see. I'll give you two examples of days on each dirt, both relatively healthy

SW

Banana on toast with butter 2syns, a satsuma afterwards.

Homemade soup, or pasta salad, or leftovers from night before. Possibly crisps 5syns. Yogurt and berries.

More fruit

Spaghetti Bolognese with grated cheese on top.

Kit kat (5syns), gin (2syns)

14syns

WW

Banana, satsumas, grapes, strawberries, yogurt.

Grilled chicken wrap 4points. Pepper sticks. Bag of French fries 2points

Turkey burger and sweet potato fries 13points

Fibre one cake batter 4points

23points (am allowed 25)

Personally I find calorie counting via My Fitness Pal or similar better.

I also would rather not line someone else's pockets while I follow WW / SW plan, paying a fiver a week and buying all the branded snacks and meals.

PutyourtoponTrevor · 02/03/2019 20:15

You don't have to buy the products, I've lost 8.5 stone on WW and have never used their products

littletreasure2017 · 05/03/2019 09:42

Thankyou very much for your replies, I decided not to join ww or slimming world because of the cost of it all, but have decided to go to boots and weigh myself weekly, eat healthier and try and get more exercise in!! Xx

It works. I lost 4 stone.

One thing for sure is that it is very expensive. Shopping became too expensive and time consuming along with membership fees as well. Group was shit so I just did it online. In the end I quit and continued my own healthy eating plan. It's been almost a year and I've still maintained my weight while having treats in moderation.

I believe you still get charged if you do not go! They're money making business. It is also designed for you to gain weight again and then go back to group. Luckily I already knew about that before I quit for good.
