Moving to Bournemouth

Hi,
Hubby and I are seriously considering moving from Hertfordshire to Bournemouth. Although it would be great to live near to the beach we just can’t afford a house in the areas near to them. We have had a look around Northbourne and it looks like a place we’re we might get to know people as it looks residential, it’s very near to the airport though.

My main concern is making friends and not feeling isolated. I moved to Eastleigh years ago and lasted only a year as I didn’t find it very friendly.

Can anyone give me any advice about Northbourne or other areas where’s it nice to live please?

Thank you.

Northbourne is ok. It's fairly close to the airport, but you wouldn't notice really.

It's a bit of a drive to the beach from there, but there is a Tesco in that area. It's quite residential.

Have you looked at any other areas?

Joanne101030 · 02/03/2019 17:21

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I’ve looked at BH2 but it’s generally just flats there . I don’t mind a bit of a drive to the beach.

Where would you suggest?

Good affordable residential areas are Littledown, Muscliffe and Throop, especially if you are planning to have kids as close to good schools (incl. Bmth grammar).

Joanne101030 · 02/03/2019 17:49

Hi,
Thank you for that. Fortunately I don’t have to worry about schools.

Do you know anything about Northbourne - is it nice please? I’ve seen a house there that I’m quite keen on.

Have a look at Winton and Wallisdown

Barrenfieldoffucks · 02/03/2019 17:54

Christchurch/Mudeford/Milford area are all nice. Not massively cheap as moving towards the Forest.

Southbourne is popular

duffinthemule · 02/03/2019 17:57

I used to live close to Northbourne. It’s perfectly nice. Very residential but walking distance to shops, a leisure centre, library. We moved because we wanted a bit more going on but its definitely a more affordable area. Good bus links into town and the beach too. About 15 min drive to beach.

ProperVexed · 02/03/2019 18:06

There's Northbourne and Northbourne if you get my drift. You want the bit closer to Redhill Avenue and the river rather than Kinson. I know the area very well. PM me if you want to give more details that I could help with

Bonkersblond · 02/03/2019 18:12

Depends which side of Northborne, near Redhill OK, near Kinson, East/West Howe I wouldn't.

Taladoo · 02/03/2019 18:12

I always found Northborne a bit boring and soulless. Sorry that is probably not what you want to hear, but I am sure other people probably like it.

Someone mentioned Wallisdown and Winton.

These are traditionally student areas and therefore generally have a more transient neighbourhood. And because of this some parts can look a bit unkempt, although I am sure that there will also be nice roads in these areas.

Taladoo · 02/03/2019 18:27

Also be careful about how close the airport is because I believe there was some talk about possible future expansions.

SinkGirl · 02/03/2019 18:33

Renting or buying? Budget?

Have a look at southbourne if you can afford it. Also Westbourne and some parts of Poole are lovely depending on where you’re working. Will you be travelling to work?

SinkGirl · 02/03/2019 18:34

Agree to have a look at Winton too - looked at some lovely houses round there, some parts are full of students

Barrenfieldoffucks · 02/03/2019 18:37

Traffic is a right pita near the airport.

Avoid Kinson, West Howe etc.

duffinthemule · 02/03/2019 19:38

People in Bournemouth are very snobby about Kinson and West Howe. It’s fine. Certainly more interesting than muscliffe which is just a housing estate! Winton and moordown are nice too - moordown is more affordable too. Lots of restaurants and shops. I’ve lived in or near Bournemouth all my life and know it very well. Pm me if you have any questions.

CluedoIsMyFavGame · 02/03/2019 20:00

Name changed...

I grew up in the Throop/Muscliffe area and family still live there. This area is close to the CastlePoint Shopping Centre (which does mean very busy traffic on Castle Lane, but handy shopping). Charminster is nice, the northern end is less studenty (nearer West Way), the end nearest town is more popular with students, it's also right by all the shops and restaurants! However this means it is very transient and can attract some disturbances as you might expect mixing students and alcohol.

Ensbury Park is also worth a look. Christchurch and Poole are basically all merged at the borders, so definitely look outside the 'Bournemouth' box.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 02/03/2019 20:07

I used to teach in Kinson. Would struggle to be further than my kind of place tbh.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 02/03/2019 20:08

'further from my kind of place' 🙄

WonkyDonk87 · 02/03/2019 20:16

Bits of Poole are reasonably priced, and the beaches are nicer Grin

captainprincess · 02/03/2019 20:19

Northboure is perfectly nice and I agree with the person who said there is Northbourne and there is Northbourne. Personally I would avoid being closer to West Howe/Kinson and closer to Redhill.
Throop/Muscliff is also nice. Again, my opinion but avoid Townsend.
All very accessible to the beach and you don't notice the airport being close at all.
Southbourne is nice but like the OP said mostly flats.

Joanne101030 · 02/03/2019 20:51

Really? I thought it was the opposite.

Thank you to everyone for you thoughts and consideration. I’m not sure we’re quite ready yet x
