Do you bother with coats for babies ?

My baby is 6 weeks old and every cost I've bought him is a nightmare to put on. The sleeves are so difficult to get on over something else. I've bought a size up but they are far too long in the arms.

What do people do? What could I try instead of a coat?

Usually can’t be bothered. Maybe a cardy and warm blankets and then tucked into the cosy toes thing in the buggy.

Is your baby usually in a buggy? I used to have mine (winter babies) in a fluffy wrap/footmuff-type thing (I had a Wallaboo wrap which was great). Vest, sleep suit, hat, maybe a cardigan or jumper, then in the wrap/footmuff. If it’s especially cold then you can put additional blankets inside the wrap/footmuff.

I don’t think either of my DCs had shoes or coats until they were well into toddler territory and therefore walking out and about aside in cold weather.

ChanklyBore · 02/03/2019 12:55

No, mine didn’t have coats until they were walking around outside and it was cold enough to need a coat, meant they didn’t actually have a “proper” coat until around age 2

No I did knitted hooded cardigans and blankets! Plus a hat if needed. Footmuff on the pushchair as well for cold weather. M&S and Gap do lovely hooded cardigans for babies, that’s what I bought. I also wasted money on those all in one pram suits they are a nightmare to get on and off, think the baby wore it once or twice and I never bothered again!

PerpetualStudent · 02/03/2019 12:58

I used fluffy pramsuits (get ones that zip up, poppers are a nightmare!) if in pram but mine spent a lot of time in a sling as tinies where I didn’t bother with extra layers above a cardie, especially if I could zip my coat around them

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/03/2019 12:58

Star wrap thing. Maggie Simpson style.

NotMyUsualTopBilling · 02/03/2019 13:02

Mine didn't have coats until they were older either.

I used to put a vest and fleecy babygrow on if it was particularly cold or just a cotton babygrow and a knitted cardigan then either into the footmuff on the pram or snuggled up against me in the sling.

llangennith · 02/03/2019 13:10

The babies in our family were too long bodied and chunky to manhandle into an all in one so it was layers of vest, sleepsuit, knitted cardi, fleece jacket, hat, gloves, extra blanket round legs etc.

prettyhibiscusflowers · 02/03/2019 13:11

Nope, just a cardigan and blanket if in the pushchair. In the car seat, no cardigan and just a blanket. She’s a very warm baby anyway.

Sparky888 · 02/03/2019 13:16

We used all in one suits, either fleecy if in a sling outside and cold, or a jersey type one in the pram.

CakeNinja · 02/03/2019 13:36

Nah, snowsuit when tiny (2 born in winter) if absolutely freezing but generally just soft and flexible layers. Vest, babygro, cardigan, blankets, hat etc. Stuff that can be removed easily but also comfortable and not restrictive.

BertieBotts · 02/03/2019 18:03

Not at that age. Lots of blankets and a hat. Once they really want arms out, thick cardigans are nice with a big duvet-like footmuff. Gap's "garter hoodies" are excellent for this. Soft but warm. DS2 has been wearing a 3-6 one since he was 2 months old and is now 6 months, in 6-9 or 9-12 mostly and it still fits. They are on sale at the moment too - well worth sale price. Then once he was sitting used a jacket type coat if in buggy with footmuff.

Never put bulky coats on in car seats as it renders them unsafe. I use the gap hoodie in the car seat though.

I never liked snowsuits/pramsuits.

SparkyBlue · 02/03/2019 20:52

No they are far too much bother to get on and off. I remember getting a gift of a fabulous one for DD when she was born and I think after struggling with getting it on and off twice I stuck it back into the wardrobe

Creatureofthenight · 02/03/2019 20:55

Nope we used pram suits/snow suits or a starsnug.
