Would you recommend having a water softener ?

We’re wondering whether to install one and just wanted peoples thoughts on whether it’s worth doing.

My husband isn’t as keen as I am. He thinks it feels like you never wash the soap/shower gel off as your skin will feel greasy.

We got one about 18 months ago. I wouldn’t be without it now!

I researched them thoroughly and went for the Harvey’s one. It wasn’t cheap at £1600 but it seemed, by far, the best. I forget all the details now (my memory is shot), but the amount/type of stone/composite whatever was far better. It also takes salt blocks rather than having to store bags of salt & fiddle about trying to get it into the machine.

You can get a three month free trial. You have to pay for it each month (under £50) but if you don’t want it they refund you once they’ve collected it and if you do want it, it comes off the amount you pay for the unit.

Installation was easy enough - well, I just watched the lovely bloke that came to donit 🤣. I think he was here about two hours. Ours is under the kitchen sink. The units are quite big.

NO MORE LIMESCALE. I’m no longer constantly trying to remove it from the taps, sink, shower heads, shower screens etc. For this alone it’s worth it.

You do need less washing up liquid/shampoo/soap etc and that does somewhat offset the price of the salt.

The salt isn’t expensive but your useage/cost will vary enormously on how much water your family uses.

It hasn’t quite had the affect on my washing machine that they say, my towels are still a bit ‘crunchy’ but I actually prefer that, do no issue there and I still sometimes use fabric softener with certain wash cycles.

...but yes, for me, the one downside (apart from the initial outlay!) is the fact it’s much harder to get the soap/shower gel off my skin, but I don’t feel greasy!). It’s a price I’m willing to pay for the benefit of not fighting limescale.

I did have one issue with it leaking, right after the warranty ended. Typically. But they said it was fine, not to worry. I thought I’d dropped one of the salt blocks into it too hard (it slipped as I was putting it in), they sent a bloke around who stripped it down, found a faulty seal, and replaced the entire ‘workings’ (one unit) no bother at all. He said they do get the odd one that goes, but it’s not terribly common and they were so good about the whole thing it really didn’t matter anyway. (I really must sort out the extended warranty!)

It’s a little bit noisy when it cleans itself, but it’s only a few minutes maybe once a day.

It definitely cleans the pipes and appliances of limescale over time - it’s fab not even thinking about limescale anymore, whereas before it was a constant chore here (south east England).

If you have any other questions I’m happy to answer them if I can. I love our Harvey, almost as much as our Henry (hoover) & Philip (senseo coffee machine) 🤣😂🤣

Promise I don’t work for them!!

Thanks for the information. It was very informative. Now I just need to persuade DH that we definitely need one!

We had one for a few years - we live in a hard water area - but dds and I didn't like it at all - in the shower it would feel as if you could never rinse the soap off properly. A sort of slimy feel.
Dh wasn't bothered.
Eventually it was disconnected. I'd never have another.

Theknacktoflying · 02/03/2019 13:56

We have one (live in the SE) and have the Kinetico (used a local agency) to supply it. We use block salt and a three month supply is about £28 that we get delivered from the agents.

Ours is portable in that, if we move house, we can take it with us.

Limescale is so much more manageable and cleaning is easier.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/03/2019 14:05

Harvey is portable too 😊

The salt cost will vary depending on how much water you use.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 02/03/2019 14:11

Ours has been in three houses. The water here is hard and it makes a big difference to things like cleaning the shower screen. I just wipe with a microfibre cloth. The kettle has much less limescale and our neighbour’s dishwasher has had to be replaced because of limescale. Thy don’t have a softener.

TeaStory · 02/03/2019 14:13

I got a Harvey’s one about 6 years ago and I love it. No limescale, less detergent/soap/shampoo/bubble bath needed and my eczema almost completely disappeared.

chocolateworshipper · 02/03/2019 14:14

I live in a hard water area and oh my goodness the cleaning is so much easier since we had ours installed! I genuinely haven't noticed a difference in washing off soap / shower gel. The only difference I've noticed in the shower is that it does take longer to rinse out my conditioner - but I probably haven't got used to using less yet.

thenightsky · 02/03/2019 14:22

We got one about 4 years ago... a Kinetico. Best ever house improvement thing we've done. I'd not be without it now. No more buying bottles of bloody Viacon or Limelite and hacking away at stalactites on my taps. My dry skin seems to have improved too and my hair is definitely in better condition. The washing machine drawer insides don't go black either as the mould doesn't have gritty surfaces to grow on.

I did keep one tiny cold tap of unsoftened water at the side of the sink, purely for cups of tea.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/03/2019 14:26

nightsky. With Harvey’s you have the choice whether to have that or not. I got it, but we never use it. I LOVE not having scale in the kettle! Or that film layer on the top of my (black) tea.

thenightsky · 02/03/2019 19:32

IncrediblySadToo Yes, the kettle suffers, but I can detect an undertaste and I'm fussy about my tea. Coffee and cooking veg etc are all fine with softened water. I also water my indoor plants with unsoftened from the little tap as I'm not wasting salt blocks on plants.

thereinmadnesslies · 02/03/2019 19:38

We had a kinetico in our old house. They say it can be moved to a new house - but when we tried to arrange to have it moved, the local kinetico installer wasn’t keen to help and wanted to charge almost as much as a new one to remove it and reinstall.

QuickRedFox · 02/03/2019 19:42

The water tastes different so we needed brita jugs to make it drinkable.
It flooded the whole house before we moved in. All the skirting board and door frames had to be replaced.
I wouldn’t bother again.

mazylou · 02/03/2019 19:47

We have one (we live in one of the hardest water areas in the country). It’s amazing, and you quickly get used to using less shampoo, etc. My skin is significantly improved.

RandomMess · 02/03/2019 19:48

Best thing ever!

Tidypidy · 02/03/2019 20:50

We love ours! Our water is very hard so limescale was a really big issue. If you use proper bars of soap rather than liquid or gels there's no issue with rinsing.

Jencottage · 02/03/2019 21:10

Wouldn't be without - showers /baths are fine and no more limescale!

thenightsky · 02/03/2019 21:38

By the way, Kinetico and Harvey both take the same salt blocks, so I buy whichever are cheaper at the time.
