Late news programmes and adult sleep times?

If you are in the sort of job where you are expected to know what was said on Newsnight, Question Time and Today, do you just not need a lot of sleep? Or these days do people often catch up on these things via online clips?

When I was a teenager I used to think that watching / hearing these programmes was part and parcel of adult professional life, but now I am guessing they are probably less important unless you are in the media or politics yourself. Elsewhere, even if it looks better if you have heard about some new proposed legislation reported that morning which is relevant to your job, it doesn't mean you have to have seen All The News.

From MN it seems that a lot of people go to bed earlier than my parents did in middle age, and earlier than a lot of my friends do, other than people who have to make a special effort to look after their health.

Watching the ten o’clock news is hardly late, is it? And with all manner of news apps which can do onstage notifications I don’t see why it would be needed. But then I’m not a journalist!

when threads come up about going to sleep, there seem to be lots of people on MN who need to be asleep by 10 or 10.30, or earlier (needing to be up early for long commutes, maybe?), so programmes that finish at 11 or 11.35 won't regularly be on the agenda.

Newsnight and Question Time are on way beyond my normal TV/screen time (except typing this!).

I wish newsnight and QT were on earlier.

huggybear · 01/03/2019 22:48

None of them are particularly late.

GetRid · 01/03/2019 22:48

This is where Twitter is useful. You can read all about what was said the night before on the bus into work.

But the importance of those programmes has massively waned in the past few years.

BeardedMum · 01/03/2019 22:53

Question time too late for me sadly. I don’t need to watch it to discuss it at work as most of my colleagues would have been sleeping too at that timeWinkmy bedtime is 10 and it’s the same for most people I know.

I'm with you OP. Used to love ranting at QT, but just can't manage to stay up for it now, and watching on catch up feels a bit pointless. Get by with snippets from Twitter, but not the same.

Question Time is on far too late. I say that as someone who regularly doesn't go to bed until 11 -11.30ish but in that last 45 mins I'm doing all the stuff that needs yo be done for the next day, or watching mindless trash to wind down.
