For the love of God, dd's piercings are never going to heal

Dd had her ears pierced 10 months ago. I followed all the advice, took her to a reputable piercing studio to have them done with a needle. Cleaned them carefully twice a day and left them in for a good 8 weeks.

They did appear to heal at first but nearly a year later we are still having problems. Tried a variety of different earrings - titanium, stainless steel etc. I don't think they are infected but they are sore, especially one side, and she keeps getting a crusty lump at the back.

She is ASD and has a very low pain threshold. She has to take the earrings out for PE so now we have this twice weekly agony of me putting them back in, her wincing and me trying not to lose patience.

I have suggested to her taking them out and trying again in a few years but she really wants to have earrings and after all this palaver it seems a waste.

We have prontolind spray which we've been using intermittently but maybe should be using it more regularly?

Any advice please? And what have I done wrong??

Thank you all, some really helpful tips.

I've found some small 9ct gold studs with nice small butterflies. Cleaned them in saltwater and put them in dd's ears. Done the saltwater soak twice now, once using an eggcup (quite drippy) and once using cotton wool pads. Waiting to hear back from school to see if she can leave them in.

I'd forgo studs for a while in favour of sleeper hoops - more
Comfortable and won't accidentally tighten up plus more air to the site. I still find studs too uncomfortable to sleep in.

I’ve had mine pierced twice, and both times they’ve gone like this- never healed, ended up infected. I have scars on the back of my ears now from the infections. As many others have said, I think that some people’s ears just aren’t meant to be pierced.

They are probably just not taking/body isn't having it. Worth trying different metals or hoops as others have suggested.

I had my nipples peirced I know its a whole other thing but they just didn't take or heal well no matter how much care I gave them so I took them out after a good 6months or so. They healed overnight practically and was like I'd never had them done. Confused

I'm another who can only wear 18ct gold earrings. Anything else makes them weepy/ gunky.

I agree anything less than 14ct in this instance might not be helpful.

Dc had hers needled 2 months ago and piercer won't even shorten the earrings yet as she says it is too cold to take the earrings out yet as cold could cause swelling. My dc tapes them for P.E. and used a saline spray for the first few weeks. We were told to spray with saline, not swim, not get hair products shampoo etc on them, not take them out for any reason and not to twiddle them. We have had no issues yet.

The after care antimicrobial lotion from Claire’s is fantastic. It finally healed my helix piercing after nearly two years.

My daughter uses T tree and that works wonders. She had her nose done and knocked it and it ended up a lump. A quick google recommended t tree and it works a treat. She uses it regularly on all her piercings. Hope that helps

One of my ears didn,t heal or it closed up and I had to repierce if I took earings out for more then a wk. Now can,t get earings in that ear at all. Don,t think I will repierce and they were sore/weepy and a faff. TBH I would take them out and wait to she is an adult and she can decide and mange herself.
