When my 6 week old is feeding, occasionally he pulls his legs to his tummy and groans like he's in pain. After feeding I wind him and occasionally he spits up some milk.

He never seems in pain after feeding and certainly doesn't cry, in fact he's very settled.

I just hate hearing like he's in pain when feeding.

I've bought some gripe water but it says to administer 30 minutes after feeding but he's fine by this time.

Do I give it him before feeding instead?

He's breastfed btw.

I gave before feeding it really helped mine

It seems like he's fine. If he was genuinely uncomfortable he'd cry, not groan. Babies make all kinds of noises while they're processing food/wind. No real need to give gripe water if baby isn't unhappy. And babies are not shy about saying they're unhappy.

It used to be great because it contained sugar and alcohol (natural painkillers) but now it's much less effective. Personally, I found infacol better although there are no magic cures.

I tried it with my first and it would be projectiled back up moments after I gave it to her. I found baby massage more effective for wind issues.

I gave it to my baby immediately after feeding when she was a few weeks old, and it made her burp LOADS (loudly!). So obviously did something. I think it made her spit up slightly less because it made her burp so easily. But in her case, the vomitting after feeds went away after a few weeks anyway. Their little digestive systems grow and get stronger fairly quickly. But trying it won't do any harm.

Infacol is better but as a PP pointed out, babies will let you know if something is wrong and groaning isn’t the same as crying.

Pinkiii · 01/03/2019 13:20

If its wind issues I would give infacol.

We used gripe water mainly for DD reflux which helped her quite a bit.

WhoWasIt · 01/03/2019 15:36

I used gripe water with mine. Unfortunately I loved it more than the kids did. Blush

PaddyF0dder · 01/03/2019 15:42

It does nothing.

None of “remedies” for colic have any scientific evidence base.

RLOU30 · 01/03/2019 15:45

I tried everything under the sun for my son when I had him last summer and I mean everything. Gripe water seemed hit and miss. The only thing that really worked was colief but it’s a pain if your BF. Time is the only thing that really works & perhaps some baby massage x

Neither infacol or gripe water have any proven effects. Pulling knees up is not a sign of pain. Wind is not a cause of colic. Colic is defined as abdominal pain of unknown reason. It normally starts after 3 weeks, goes on to about 3 months and causes hours of inconsollable crying, really crying. Not groaning. It is normal for babies to be fussy and unsettled at times I dont think this sounds like pain at all. Regugitating some milk is also very normal. Relax and enjoy him

Thanks everyone for the advice, much appreciated
