Teenager car insurance

Longlostperson · 28/02/2019 21:54

So we wanted to buy our 18 year old ds a car.
We are first looking for car insurance before we look at cars though.
I knew it would be expensive but it’s coming to around £3000 which is shocking. Anayone found cheap insurance for their newly passed dc?

What car are you looking with. We found there was wide variation by car type either within similar size and power

Threeminis · 28/02/2019 22:02

Presuming you/your partner have been driving for a while put one of you on the insurance as a named driver. It brings the costs down quite significantly.

cardibach · 28/02/2019 22:03

Second the point about car types - make a huge difference.
There is a company called Drive Like A Girl who were brilliant when DD had her first solo insurance. They had isolated the reasons girls have fewer accidents, put in a black box and measured those things (no aggressive acceleration or sudden braking, late at night driving). They were reasonably priced and when the box read her driving as good they refunded some of the premium. It was recommended by Money Saving Expert for both boys and girls.

Pinkyyy · 28/02/2019 22:06

There's no such thing as cheap insurance for new, young drivers. You should be able to get it closer to £2000 though, depending on the car.

dartitus · 28/02/2019 22:07

What car is it? That does seem quite high. A 1.4 Peugeot cost me 75 a month with a black box for my first year. Is the car you’ve brought him a high litre?

TheFairyCaravan · 28/02/2019 22:09

We used Ingenie for our kids. It's insurance specifically for young drivers. They had to have a black box but it had no curfews as many do. They were the main driver but DH and I were additional drivers which brought the premium down.

DS2 had a Renault Clio, the premium started off at £1100ish but came down to £900 over the year because he drove well

Longlostperson · 28/02/2019 22:12

We have been looking for the cheapest one according to insurance companies are cheaper to insure. We have tried on both our names ( we have years of NCB too). Just doesn’t make threat much of a difference.
Im assuming drive like a girl is just for girls? confused]

The fairycaravan. That’s such a good price. I will look at ingenie. Shock

DS is 18 and has a Corsa. his insurance was £1800 in total, with morethan. That was with his dad and both grandparents named as additional drivers on the policy.

jigster01 · 28/02/2019 22:51

Ds20 Policy holder and both parents as named drivers ,park overnight in drive ,no box ,£970 for 10 mths Admiral ..that was a week after passing his test ,couldn't believe it

BlueCornishPixie · 28/02/2019 22:56

I would get as many passed named drivers as you can. So add you, partner to see if you can get it down. Try out different combos on compare the market, see if you can get it lower.

Mine was 5 years ago now but was only 800 with elephant for a peugeot 206, can't believe how expensive some of these are Shock I would never have been able to drive if it had been 3000!

Longlostperson · 28/02/2019 23:20

Jigster- that’s amazing Shock

My son is only 16 but my dad is planning yo gove him his Hyundai i10 in a year when he passes his test.
I've just run the figures on him being a year older and driving for 2 months with me as a named driver and 5000 miles a year on Moneysavingexpert and 3 cheapest initial quotes were £880, £930 and £1,388.

safariboot · 28/02/2019 23:39

Location is a huge factor so you can't really compare prices with other people in different places. 3 grand for an 18 year old doesn't surprise me for many urban areas.

I was a new driver in my late 20s and the car choice didn't seem to make that much difference within reason, a 'group 1' car would only have been about 10% less than the group 15-ish car I ended up with.

Employment status matters, though I'm not sure how much. Unemployed people get charged more, so if DS is seeking work, consider waiting until he gets a job before getting the car. If he's studying, unfortunately students also get charged relatively high premiums.

Fabellini · 28/02/2019 23:44

Ds2 has a 1 litre Renault Clio. He passed his test a few weeks ago and has got insurance from RAC. I’m a named driver and he was quite happy to have a black box fitted - it’s costing him £960 for the year.
He’d originally been insured with the Post Office while he was learning, but when he rang them to advise that he’d passed his test, they were going to increase his premium from around £400 to nearly £3k. They didn’t offer the option of a black box either, I don’t think.

BackforGood · 28/02/2019 23:54

Your postcode has a huge impact. So us telling you what our dc got it down to is a bit irrelevant really.
The only advice is to keep shopping around. Tell him 4 hours doing this seems like a long time but if it saves him £400 / £700 £1000 then that is a good return for his money.

Do add other drivers though it does help.

Even though I am ancient and have been driving for decades, I still get some ridiculous quotes and tend to put a day aside for searching for better, every time my insurance comes round.

safariboot · 01/03/2019 00:20

Oh yeah one other thing. Get quotes for cover to start 2-4 weeks away, don't leave it til the last minute. If you end up having to buy car insurance to start tomorrow everything will be a couple of hundred quid more expensive.

BoringPerson · 01/03/2019 00:28

Postcode makes ALL the difference. Some companies wouldn't even insure my son despite him having 5 years no claims and no other reasons to have a problem with insurance. It was simply because of the location where the car would be parked overnight.

Longlostperson · 01/03/2019 02:14

All very good advice. Thank you.
I will keep shopping around.
Ds is not in a hurry to get a car atm , he’s still happy to use public transport, but he’s a uni student and has to travel at least 4 hours round trip a few times a week (hes living at home ) so with a car it would take him 1 hour tops and this would free up more time for him to get more work hours.
Most of the quotes on here I haven’t even got close to. So I’m thinking it’s my postcode then Hmm

RightOcciputAnterior · 01/03/2019 07:57

Yep, a lot of this is location. I was 25 when I passed my test, but my first year's insurance was about £2k because I lived in Liverpool city centre. In contrast, I've had 2 accidents in the past 3 years, but my premium now is only £800 because I live in a small market town. I've always found Admiral the most competitive - get a quote from them.

Blobby10 · 01/03/2019 08:31

Another here who recommends Ingenie. My daughter has it and the black box. The cashback is a bit of a swizz as someone who does lots of motorway driving is going to get a better 'score' (and therefore more cashback!) than someone who just does shorts journeys through country lanes and towns which involves more steering and braking! But the price is good and their customer service is excellent.

MadisonAvenue · 01/03/2019 17:39

It cost us £1250 to insure our 18 year old (15 minutes after returning from the test centre) for a Fiat Punto with Admiral. He has a black box.

mysteryfairy · 01/03/2019 20:02

If no car purchased yet can I recommend Skoda Fabia? Admittedly uncool but it’s a really low insurance group. My son is too tall for some of the tiniest cars e.g. vw up. When we bought a car for him after some incidents which made reducing insurance cost we ran lots of possibilities and The fabia was definitely cheapest without being minute - maybe also doesn’t have boy racer appeal! Won’t solve the possible postcode issue of course but may help to make costs manageable.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/03/2019 20:11

My ds passed his test aged 17. We bought insurance with a black box for £850, he was driving a Fiat Panda and both dh and I were named drivers. Car is kept on our driveway at night and we live in a low-crime postcode.
