Has anyone had low vitamin D?

After having blood tests for exhaustion, muscle aches and pains and brain fog my doctor has found out I have very low vitamin D levels. Has anyone else had this and what symptoms did you have? did the symptoms get better after supplementation?

Hi, yes I have a vit D deficiency. I had all the symptoms you mentioned including pain in my bones and some anxiety which was possibly linked but not sure. Once I had a heavy dose of Vit D I could tell the difference within a couple of weeks. I now take daily suppliments and can tell easily if my levels start to drop again due to tiredness and pains in my legs. Getting on top of it makes a huge difference in how I feel. Hope it helps you very soon

I was also told this week that I have this after having blood tests done at the end of last year (was initially told by GP surgery that all the blood results were ok). I went to the GP with exhaustion (which I had put down to my frequent night shifts, 13hr + days shifts without a break and non-sleeping DC) and anxiety. I also had significant neck pain last week, which I now think could be related, but had otherwise put down to work and falling asleep sitting on an uncomfortable chair waiting for DC to go to sleep. I only picked up the prescription today, but am desperately hoping it is the answer to all my problems and I can go back to being a normalish, functioning person who isn't tired and miserable all the time.

tired17 · 28/02/2019 17:41

As with the PP I had the same symptoms and the Vit D supplement made a huge difference. I too can tell now if my levels are going down.

Take a tablet every day now - l don't want to feel that ill again if I can help it.

I’ve just finished a 7 week course 1 tablet per week of Vit D due to low levels. I’m meant now on 4000 iu vitamin d per day to keep levels up and currently waiting to hear what my latest blood tests show. I feel much better than I did before I started the course, I already have connective tissue disorder which causes pain, but I felt very rough from low vit d: fatigue, body pain, crap memory.
Hopefully you’ll feel better once you’ve finished taking the bigger prescription dose.

Interesting that a couple of posters had low vitamin D and anxiety. Do any other posters? Wondering if low vitamin D causes anxiety?

tired17 · 28/02/2019 18:13

Speaking personally I had very low mood along with anxiety when my levels were low. This improved as my levels went back up and is one of the signs I recognise if they drop again

Nnnnnineteen · 28/02/2019 19:01

If I forget my tablets e.g. on holiday, it re emerges as anxiety, exhaustion and my hair falls out more. When I was originally diagnosed I thought they were going to find something awful as I was so poorly, but with the tablets daily it's never been quite so bad again.

Okki · 28/02/2019 19:23

Yes and my moods are affected - quite low. I was on concentrated Vit D oil for 3 months - monthly dose the first time. And that might explain why I'm feeling low and heavy at the moment. I don't always make the connection - better stock up.

Moominfan · 28/02/2019 19:27

Similar to all the other posters, every now and then I become lax taking vitamins and symptoms reapear

Leeds2 · 28/02/2019 19:28

Our GP told my DD that many people are low on Vitamin D at this time of year, but most of them don't realise. She started taking ordinary vitamin tablets (not high dose), and he advised her to make sure her bare skin was exposed to sunlight as the opportunity arose.

Crinkle77 · 28/02/2019 19:28

Yes my levels were 17 so extremely low. For me it was complete physical exhaustion, aching legs, terrible brain fog and feeling interested after sleep. I was out on 20000 iu a day for 7 days then 1 a week for a further 7 weeks. As soon as I stop taking it I feel awful and my levels drop so take a 3000iu oral spray every day. It took a long time for me to start feeling better and I am still not 100% I am sure I have ME or something but trying to get the docs you take you seriously is difficult.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 28/02/2019 19:29

Similar here. Low mood, tiredness, general malaise. Vit D in my boots. I take supplements October - March and have definitely noticed a difference this winter.

Crinkle77 · 28/02/2019 19:30

Should say unrefreshed after sleep

Thecrown3 · 28/02/2019 19:36

@crinkle77
I was exact same reading as you and was shocked as I work outdoors all year, also that was in September after the summer we had had.
I was all the symptoms you said too.
And the prescribed dose!!

This is the first winter I have coped ... also my s.a.d symptoms have been far less!
I also take 400 mg of magnesium which you must take to balance the vit d, as I was feeling rough just on vit d.
I also add 1000mg of vit c and b12....

I’m evangelical about vit d now!

Thecrown3 · 28/02/2019 19:37

Btw took 4 weeks to feel benefits but a good 2 months to really kick in

ataleoftwothenthreethenfour · 28/02/2019 19:41

I don't know as I haven't been tested, but my doctor has given me three months of vitamin D as I have had a series of virus and infections and he thinks I might be a bit run down.

Gunpowdertea · 28/02/2019 19:43

Thats really interesting. I have all those symptoms but never put it down to vitamin D. I have a lung condition and at my last check up it was mentioned that for some unknown reason there tends to be low vitamin D levels with it. Anyway - your question, I have been taking vitamin D since August and I feel brighter, more energy, I have not had a single proper cold this Winter. It is called the sunshine vitamin. The NHS actually now recommends everyone takes it between October and March as you do not get enough during darker winter months - it is synthesised by sunlight. My Dr advised start even earlier. I started as I know I get SAD also it is good for the immune system. High strength 1000.

ThunderStorms · 28/02/2019 19:47

Can you take vitamin d with a multi vitamin with iron?

I suspect mine are low, but not sure how to balance the tablets. My dr is very dismissive so I’m experimenting myself.

(Sorry to hijack)

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 28/02/2019 19:49

Me too, but I found out after blood tests following a bone density scan. Osteoporosis so high dosage calcium as well as high dose d. Interestingly I get pains across my shoulder blades and down my legs, which I'd attributed to the arthritis I've just found out I have. Life is just a blast!

Thecrown3 · 28/02/2019 19:50

As I’ve just posted on another similar thread , you must take 400mg of magnesium to balance 1500 mg of vit d- pharmacist explained it balances out the vit d otherwise it will calcify or similar .
If you google vitamin d and magnesium.

I also lost 7 lb within weeks of taking, alledgely if short of vit d it can trigger your hormones to eat more to try to get vit d!!

pisspawpatrol · 28/02/2019 19:58

Yes, I was diagnosed with Vitmain D after a routine broad blood screening for different hormones. I was put on 20000iu dose, to take 3x a week which is a very high dose. I feel so much better now and I didn't even know it was causing me problems before.

Looking back I was permanently exhausted (which I've always struggled with tbh) oversleeping, lots of aches and pains and feeling sluggish with low concentration. Much of it is also symptoms of anxiety which is what I was blaming it all on. Since taking the high dose vit D I've been sleeping better, much more energy, better concentration. Long term I've been told to take the recommended daily dose bought over the counter.

Livid21 · 28/02/2019 20:03

Lots of these symptoms are also thyroid symptoms and they can go together, so make sure your thyroid is tested too.

Crinkle77 · 28/02/2019 20:28

Interesting @Thecrown3 will try magnesium. I have never been told to take it.

cinders15 · 28/02/2019 21:53

I was taking the normal vitamin d supplement daily and my GP asked me why I didn't take dmax once a month - better than a pill every day
So I buy dmax (20,000) and me and my family take one on the first of each month

Thecrown3 · 01/03/2019 11:50

@cinders are they ok for 11year olds?
