Would you revisit the GP? Panicking.

Long story short DS had headache and high temp (40.1) last night. Down to 38.8 this morning with ibuprofen and calpol. Complained of sore neck in the night. 111 called for advice. Took him to GP as per 111's advice this AM. Dr said he might be developing tonsilitis - redness (only minor) at back of throat and glands slightly swollen. Given a "just in case" prescription to take if he worsens.

I have huge health anxiety where DS is concerned due to my own ill health as a child.

Have seen how tonsillitis and meningitis can be mistaken.

He is lethargic still, at my parents on the sofa. temp now 37 so slowly dropping but only with constant administration of alternate calpol/ibuprofen.

Would you get the prescription, administer and see? Or would you re-visit the GP and if so when?

Forgot to add he's 4.

He was naked, under a blanket last night, burning hot to touch and yet shivering and complaining of being cold.

Currently laying on the sofa at my parents watching tv. Only just managed to eat half a small childs pizza all day. Refusing goodies like ice lolly or yogurt which are normally snapped up.

Call 111 again?

Please don’t panic ...

He will be fine ...

I would just wait. His temperature is improving and the GP said to give him antibiotics if he got worse and he has not got worse.

Lethargic is normal when unwell. If he becomes floppy or unresponsive then call 999.

Butterflycookie · 28/02/2019 12:22

I would get the prescription as the gp has given it to you if he’s worsened.

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 12:22

I think it doesn't help that I am not with him... So whilst Mum says he's fine... My mind is thinking "Is he though?"

FWIW I had meningitis at 3 weeks old and was given 24 hours to live..

OK. Thanks all. Feel so stupid panicking

If it is a fever and viral, antibiotics/prescription will do nothing ...

A fever is a good thing - it means that the body is fighting infection.

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 12:43

The Dr said she could see slight redness on his tonsils and his glands were up a bit. I don't know if that indicates viral or bacterial. Antib's are for bacterical right?

Theknacktoflying · 28/02/2019 12:52

My understanding is that ABs only treat bacterial infections not viral infections...

Poor guy ... Sure he will be feeling better soon.

Buddyelf · 28/02/2019 12:57

The first time my DD got tonsillitis I was terrified. Her temp was over 40 and she was so lethargic and poorly, never seen her like that before and it was scary. Tonsillitis is horrible and can really make young children feel horrendous.
However if you are still worried go and get the antibiotics or see the GP.

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 12:58

I'm off work tomorrow. Dr said he can go to school if I feel he's ok. I think I will keep him off to rest.

headaches and stiff neck do come with tonsillitis - can he put his neck on his chest (meningitis check)

DS always gets headaches with a fever - its just the way it is for him. That is the symptom he always complains about then I look in his throat and normally that is pretty awful! When its bacterial ouishis are literally covered in white/yellow when its viral they are red. Keep an eye and if it goes white/yellow antibiotics

He will need the constant calpol/ibuprofen for around 2-3 days or the fever breaks.

Being tired is normal - being unrousable is not. I would let him have tomorrow off!

cjt110 · 28/02/2019 13:55

Yes hes had the chin to chest check and will continue to do so at home.

I hate him having time off school but itd be nigh on unbearable for him to.be in
