What to download for a 7mth old for long haul flight

Obviously I'm hoping DS will sleep like a baby (someone else's, as he doesn't sleep!) but I want to be prepared as it's a long haul flight and even if it only get us ten minutes of peace, I'm willing to resort to using a screen.

We don't really use the TV/tablet with him at home so I don't know what to download. Any suggestions for anything which is ideally free to download to an iPad?

The little baby bum nursery rhyme videos were my DS's first actually interested in videos. They are on YouTube or Netflix. They might drive everyone else on the flight demented though....

MissGiddyPants · 27/02/2019 23:27

Surely not? Can babies wear headphones? You can't subject other passengers to random baby apps.

jellycatspyjamas · 27/02/2019 23:31

If you don’t use it with him at home, it may not help him in a strange place to have a new experience thrown in for good measure and 7 months is very very little to introduce screens. What do you usually do to keep him happy and calm, would any of that travel well?

Can you download from youtube? I don't have Netflix and I've never downloaded anything to my iPad! I plan to just use the screen and no sound

No.
Books. Stickers at a push? Not an iPad for a baby, please.

MaggieFS · 27/02/2019 23:33

Twice when we've been desperate I've sat him in front of whatever came up on you tube for 'baby sensory' to calm him down which is why I thought this might be a good emergency plan, but wasn't aware you could download from you tube so I'll look into it.

A 7 month old? Nothing!! They don't need to be sticking their faces in screens.

Texture books, a few small sensory toys. Normal baby stuff that's easy to carry.

Wenttoseainasieve · 27/02/2019 23:37

Why no iPad for the baby? On a long haul flight it might be useful, I doubt it's an everyday occurrence, and really, it won't break them..

You can get sensory type games for the iPad where the baby can do things like pop bubbles, aquariums, make stars appear/explode in colours, mine liked that kind of thing for a few minutes OP Grin

Loving the pearl clutching over screen time for babies. I have six month twins and five little ducks on Litle Baby Bum will quiet their hysteria faster than anything you have ever seenWink

I’m not sure regarding the noise though OP. I wouldn’t be too chuffed to be stuck listening to LBB on a long haul flight. It’s entirely possible your baby will find the flight ibself interesting enough. My two would be mind blown to get on a plane!

Ours didn't really "get" watching things at this age. I remember one playing with the airline drinking cup for ages though.
Aged 18 months Toddler Tap was a good app. A bit older than that Mr Tumble, and they weren't bothered if they could hear it actually.
You'll end up walking around with them a lot but they will probably sleep for a bit.

Not an iPad for a baby, please

Snort - she's not suggesting feeding it crack. Honestly, a screen for a few minutes (or hours if the passengers are lucky) as a one off really isn't going to cause irreparable damage.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2019 06:36

I'd say have it as part of your armoury but it would, like any other "weapon " in that armoury have a good chance of losing out to you playing "peep-oh" or whatever desperate random thing you come up with at that time of the day to entertain baby. Only in this situation you can't go out for a walk and hope a change of scene will to the trick (just me who did that ConfusedGrin?)
In other words, there is no magic answer but I am sure you will come up with something. Including an iPad. Or a fuzzy feel book. Or a favourite toy.

Seahawk80 · 28/02/2019 06:47

You can download things from the ceebeebies app - we flew with DS at 8 months and I did this but to be honest he had never shown any interest in TV and that didn't change on the plane! I also took a few toys, a teething necklace and did lots of bouncing up and down! It was fine though, much easier than when we flew to
Edinburgh when he was 15 months and I ended up in tears!

Desmondo2016 · 28/02/2019 06:52

My dd was about 15-18 months before watching stuff grabbed her attention for more than 30 seconds (now 2 and a bit she could watch all day if I let her!)

Desmondo2016 · 28/02/2019 06:53

When we took her on a flight at 8 mo the, she pulled the ponytail of the person in front pretty much all flight. Luckily it was a fanily member!

brookshelley · 28/02/2019 06:58

We travel a lot and DCs didn't respond to videos until almost 2 years old. They can't really focus younger than that.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/02/2019 06:59

Do 7 month old babies actually watch anything? I'm sure DS had zero interest in the TV at that age. Take a selection of books and toys!
