Veggie protein snacks - advice please

Hi. Sorry this isn't more interesting.

DD doing her DofE Gold this year. When she did bronze and silver expeditions, I slipped her some extra emergency snacks for if she got lost or just needed the energy boost. Some sugar ones and some protein. Typically biltong for the protein ones.

She's now gone veggie and her practice is in a couple of weeks. Any advice for high protein which is small, light and won't go off if not kept in the fridge? I was thinking hard-boiled eggs, but she's not a great fan.

Any advice much appreciated (and, btw, have already considered swapping her for a less-faddy child).

Could you make muffins, or biscuits, if she likes chocolate and peanut butter, that's a good combination. Does she like nut butters?

I used to get recipes off 'One Green Planet' and make my own bars, or you could buy them.

Lidl and Aldi sell a trail mix in small packs, or you can make your own up.

Cheese and even a milkshake type drink, are good pick-me-ups.

Also, does she eat Hummus?

Nuts are the obvious thing to take if she likes them.

You can make a good, high protein snack by roasting cooked chickpeas with spices or just salt.

Edamame/soya beans? My daily mid morning snack are the beans with a dressing of sesame oil and soy sauce with sesame seeds. Depends how long they need to keep though.

I bought a pouch of chocolate peanut butter in Asda. She could take this and just 'drink' it straight from the pouch if nuts are allowed.

I've seen vegetarian jerky in various supermarkets lately. If she liked biltong she may enjoy that.(Disclaimer: I haven't tried it)

MyNewBearTotoro · 27/02/2019 20:28

There are lots of high protein fruit & nut style bars such as the Nakd protein crunchie bars, the Trek bars or Bounce peanut balls.

Or alternatively Aldi do a ‘vegan jerky’ - no idea how tasty it is though.

Arla do a nice yoghurt which you can buy in squeeze type packets, so no spoon needed. Not sure how long they'd be ok out the fridge, but light and portable and 20g of protein.

Babybel?

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 27/02/2019 20:32

The vegetarian jerky is actually really nice, chewier than biltong because it's more like jerky but really yummy. You can get it in Alidi and I've seen it in Asda too although it's cheaper in Aldi.

Great suggestions!

She's not a massive nut eater, but I'm going to suggest she re-tries some as she hasn't eaten them in years.

But yes, I'll look at all of those.

Thank you all so much. Flowers

Avocado could work really well they are delicious with a pinch of salt and balsamic vinegar. She could bring a spork to open it and eat with.

Lidl(if you have one near you) sell mini Graze style boxes for 69p. There's one called veggie protein power that may suit. I think there's about four total. Otherwise Graze sell various boxes in most supermarkets now.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 27/02/2019 21:33

Actual brilliance!

She loves avocados. She drinks almond milk, so can get that plus will suggest she tries actual almonds.

I'll try and find the veggie jerky and I love the chickpea suggestion (just anyway) and yes to the yogurt pouches and cheeses.

The hummus wouldn't work, although she loves it. But too messy, too much risk of it bursting in the rucksack and really needs a fridge.

Thank you all so much for great suggestions. Really appreciate everyone taking the time

I bought some Trek peanut/cocoa protein pieces...they have 12g in a pack and are yummy. I got them in Waitrose in the free from bit.
