Benefits as a student

If myself and DH were both full time students - me on a postgraduate course and him an undergraduate would we be entitled to any tax credits etc ? We have two DCs, live in a rented property. I've been looking online but can't see any clear guidelines on it. Just wondered if anyone else had done the same ?

You would both be eligible for student finance, mostly repayable loans, and these would count towards your entitlement to Universal Credit.

Can you not study part time?

No I'm doing PGDE so cannot work part time either. Just working out finance. If we cannot get any extra help DH will not go until the year after when I am working full time as we can survive on his salary plus my student loan.

Student finance counts as income so you are entitled to £18k, any uc will be on top of that, but childcare etc is calculated separately

The student finance forms are now available for 2019/2020. Fill them in and see what happens :)

In Scotland? I thought they weren't out until April

Yes you can get universal credit in substitute of child tax credits
You wouldn't be entitled to the equivalent of JSA/income support/ESA as student loan covers that
You can claim childcare from student finance but it's not guaranteed

Single parent student here.

I get full Student Loan and Maintenance Grant. Childcare Grant covers 85%. My Uni cover the other 15%.

I get Tax Credits and Child Benefit. I’m not on UC due to having 3 children. I get some housing benefit as I’m a single parent.

I also get bursaries and scholarships from my University due to being from a deprived background, first to go to University and studying at a local college.

Look at the University you would be attending website at their financial support pages.

Also look for bursaries related to your subject. I get one as I’m a single parent doing a STEM subject.
