Secrets from Behind the Scenes! Do you have any?

I usually wonder all kinds of shit late a night! For instance:

I was watching Long Lost Family last night and I wondered whether, when they tell people that parents/siblings have passed "off camera" do they still visit them or is it just done over the phone?

For people who are TV extras, is it like the Ricky Gervais series. Are you largely ignored or to the main actors ever speak to you?

People who work in retail, e.g. supermarkets or clothes shops do you ever get given anything totally for free?

I think I need more sleep!

I work for a large perfume retailer and we get given almost £3000 worth of new perfumes a year Smile

AnarchyKitty · 26/02/2019 17:12

I used to work for a big orange supermarket and we got a staff card with a whopping 10% off our shopping.

WillGymForPizza · 26/02/2019 17:37

I worked in New Look as a teenager and we used to get 50% discount. Ive no idea if this is still the case, I know the norm for most places is 25%.

Not surprised to hear That Sainsbury's are so tight. I know people who work for them and they all shop elsewhere.

muckydogpaws · 26/02/2019 18:02

My DD used to work for a big hotel chain and the fancy little starters they did at weddings were bought at Iceland. She saw the chef taking them out of the packaging! Apparently you can't do them cheaper yourself.

EscapeTheCastle · 26/02/2019 18:05

It was 25% off Our Price back in the 90's and briefly WH Smith too when I think they were owned by the same company for a bit. Also the Disney rep who came in to rearrange the Disney VHS tapes would give us a free branded pencil some times. The glamour!

Some musicians are absolutely lovely, despite their image and reputation as 'bad boys'.

Some who have a wholesome image or who are treated by the press as unfortunate geniuses are complete arseholes.

And some, who appear nice and friendly on stage/PR are exactly the same off it.

As Chuck Berry once said, you never can tell.

Ktay · 26/02/2019 18:27

Sainsbury’s aren’t especially tight in terms of supermarkets; 10% off is standard. Other (non-food) retailers are more generous.

MyPatronusIsAnOrca · 26/02/2019 18:40

I used to work for a department store whilst at uni and we got 20% off as staff discount.

BUT only via the store card; so you had to be approved. I have to say any discount was usually wiped out by the interest charged if the balance wasn’t paid off in full,

squeefy · 26/02/2019 18:49

tesco used to be a staff card= 10% off purchases (haven`t worked there for a few years).

VelvetPineapple · 26/02/2019 18:53

I used to work in a restaurant and the waitresses did all the desserts because they were easy and not worth wasting the chef’s time on. You basically just assembled the dessert by defrosting it and putting a blob of cream etc on the side. The fancy looking swirls of sauce that decorate the plate are just ice cream syrup.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 26/02/2019 18:56

In the shop I worked in we got 50% off clothes and a free garment every 6 months (worth a couple of hundred usually).

Thesearmsofmine · 26/02/2019 18:58

I worked at Etam/Tammy Girl as a teenager and got 50% off clothes. I also worked for La and would get 40% when the new catalogue came out.

Thesearmsofmine · 26/02/2019 19:00

La Redoute*

isseywithcats · 26/02/2019 19:01

i work for tgi fridays and we get staff discount off food of 50% for up to four people but not anything off drinks

jaimebravo · 26/02/2019 19:21

I worked for a technology company as a student...think fruit.
We got 10% of their full price products a couple of times a year. Even with the discount I could never afford anything when I worked there.

strawberrisc · 26/02/2019 22:00

Wow! Some fab discounts and some right stingy ones. And I loved Tammy Girl!

I worked in monsoon as a teenager and we used to get 75% off!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 26/02/2019 22:10

I work for a local authority primary school.

I have a big box of pencils.

ChesterGreySideboard · 26/02/2019 22:18

I used to work for an opticians and we were the best at selling a certain brand of contact lenses. The company would take us out for pizza every so often.

Other than that the only free stuff was things you nicked.

My uncle is an extra in lots of stuff as he is an amputee and there is a lot of call for that.
Generally he gets ignored by the stars.

Now I’m a teacher - the only job where you steal stuff from home to take to work.

fikel · 26/02/2019 22:21

As a professional actress who has also been an extra, there is a big difference if you’re featured. Extras are treated largely like cattle and the artists mostly don’t have a great deal to do with them

ballsdeep · 26/02/2019 22:22

@bath I am jealous! We have a jig pack of pencils to last two years between the whole key stage 😂😂

Exploration2018 · 26/02/2019 22:37

Teacher- secondary. Since the abolition of standardised levels. Grading is now very subjective and most grades are plucked out of the air from a gut feeling. We can pretend that they are based in some accurate concept but they are not.

tararabumdeay · 26/02/2019 22:38

My dad worked for Massey Furguson most of his working life. Our gate was red; our shed and fence was red; our house and everything in it was red.

My mate's dad worked for John Deere...

Exploration2018 · 26/02/2019 22:39

*KS3 levels. Although the new GCSe grades are also a bit of a mystery too!!

Atalune · 26/02/2019 22:41

I used to work for a fine dining restaurant. We ate and drank very well!
