Please can anyone help

She's got a virus and a temp of 39.5 she's 18 months olds and is refusing to take calpol which will bring her fever down

I've tried the syringe which she doesn't want and i've tried forcing her to have it but she's spitting it out, ive offered a spoon which she's refusing to open her mouth for, ive tried using a bottle teat which she also doesn't want i'm pulling my hair out she feels so so hot but won't take anything does anyone have any ideas i can try???

I sometimes mix it into a Peppa Pig yoghurt (I usually eat half first so there's not too much left to eat), or mix it with milk if you think she'll drink it all. Or bribery with chocolate?

Good luck, my DD is a calpol refuser and it's so frustrating!

Tryingtogetitright · 25/02/2019 22:33

Hope she's better soon.

pastabest · 25/02/2019 22:33

You need to squeeze the syringe into the side of her cheek a tiny bit at a time (in between screams basically Sad)

Then lots of cuddles.

You have my sympathies. My DD was the same... she would gag and vomit it out. We requested for paracetamol suppositories and given it by the GP. We used a supps until she was about 2 when I'll. she is now nearly three and takes calpol via syringe.

RLOU30 · 25/02/2019 22:35

My son does this. I squeeze it on the side of his cheek tiny bit by tiny bit it takes forever and it’s horrible to see them getting so distressed. You have my sympathies!

cestlavielife · 25/02/2019 22:40

Wrap toddler in towel or blanket to keep legs and arms still
Hold in left arm with face forward. Head in crook of arm. So can't move
Syringe in right hand and squirt in to cheek
Stroke chin to encourage swallow

Schmoozer · 25/02/2019 22:40

In the cheek !
Unpleasant but necessary 😩

Lucylugs · 25/02/2019 22:42

I agree suppositories are great. Warm them very quickly in a little warm water to soften coating. Also try something cold on her feet. My cousin swears by slices of potato put in freezer for few mins then put in socks. It did bring my daughters temp down a bit when she had fever.

keepforgettingmyusername · 25/02/2019 22:43

I saw someone saying they dip the syringe in melted chocolate before. Tbh I just force it in when needs be though. Or add to milk if really desperate. But a lot of doctors say they don't really need it for a temperature unless it's making them lethargic (my DS definitely would be lethargic at that temp though) Make sure to offer lots of juice and ice lollies too.

marshymy · 25/02/2019 22:45

i'm trying the cheek method! It used to work when she was a few months younger but now she's figured that if she blows a raspberry as soon as it's in it'll all come out! Sad i'm so worried she's going to have a fit with how hot she is, she's sleeping but very restless i've been trying every half hour since half 5 to get it in her.

ill ring the doctors in the morning and ask about suppositories i didn't know they did them!

Bribery with chocolate worked with mine.

Queenfreak · 25/02/2019 22:52

Blow in her face when you've got a bit of Calpol in.
Will make her swallow

marshymy · 25/02/2019 22:53

can i buy the suppositorys over the counter? i could go now and buy them

I've tried blowing in her face, there were four of us earlier two pinning her arms and legs and two blowing. She managed to get it out Sad

Put the teat from a bottle over the end of the syringe for her to suck on?

Daisymay2 · 25/02/2019 22:56

Some children really hate the taste of Calpol and others hate the texture. Neither of mine would take Calpol. There are other brands which are less thick and orange flavour. I think LLoyds do an own brand and I vaguely remember something like Paraped
Not a lot of help right now I realise. I can't add much to cestlavielife

Scotstar · 25/02/2019 22:57

I have to mix in with milk or a yogurt/jelly

Scotstar · 25/02/2019 22:57

Or wait til sje is a deep sleep if you can and use syringe a tiny bit at a time then and rub cheeks after each bit

TheSheepofWallSt · 25/02/2019 23:00

Don’t do it when sleeping. She could choke.

Bribery- melt some chocolate, let it cool slightly, give a spoonful with no Calpol. Go to get “some more”- do 50/50 Calpol/choc mix. 5ml of Calpol plus choc to match should be about a tablespoon...

Valentinesxdayideasxx · 25/02/2019 23:01

I saw this the other day. Hope it helps.

Wow, I always have the opposite problem! My daughter drinks the stuff by the bottle! (As does my teenager) Have you tried holding her nose until she has to open her mouth, then putting calpol in then making her swallow?

Hope she feels better soon!

user1489792710 · 25/02/2019 23:25

No unfortunately you can't buy suppositories over the counter and not readily available in most pharmacies ( we are in Scotland though). Please call your GP and request for supps. My daughter had hand foot and mouth and refused to eat or drink because of the pain at the time. They prescribed it without a fuss when explained she absolutely refused to take calpol.

I'm not sure but you could call your local pharmacy and inquire if available to buy. A pack is quite expensive though.

Drogosnextwife · 25/02/2019 23:25

What! Holding her nose, giving it to her while she is sleeping. Have people gone mad?
OP having 4 people pin your dd down and force something in her mouth will be quite traumatizing. I know you are worried but thats not ideal. Mixing it with something like yoghurt as a pp said is probably the best idea.

SerendipityReally · 25/02/2019 23:27

Try cherry flavour, or orange as DaisyMay mentioned.

Lloyds and, I think, Asda used to do cherry flavour paracetamol. Our Calpol-hater loved it.

marshymy · 25/02/2019 23:42

I've been on the phone to 111 we've been told to go to a&e
