If I loved Elenor Oliphant what else would I like?

I’m wanting some new books and don’t know where to start. I want relatively easy reads, I have a baby so can’t be dealing with anything that can’t be dropped in and out of. Any recommendations?

Ive been attempting to read Eleanor Oliohant for about 6 months. I even downloaded the Audible
to speed me on a bit. I just really really dislike it, and I don’t even know why.

I loved Eleanor Oliphant, but hated the Rosie Project (reminded me too much of my Ex). Eleanor Oliphant was fantastic though, so placemarking for other ideas ....

Years ago (possibly still in print), I adored the book "Behind the Scenes at the Museum".

.... by Late Atkinson

Oooh yes - Behind the Scenes at the Museum is absolutely, totally, knockout brilliant. I've read it three times.

You might also like Olive Kitteridge, and The Shipping News, OP.

Fab! Thank you for all the ideas I have already ordered some. It’s so hard because books you love are so individual.

Try the Lido by Libby Page. I think it has a similar vibe to Elinor Oliphant.

HebeMumsnet · 26/02/2019 15:12

The Truths and Triumphs of Grace Atherton.

Propertywoes · 26/02/2019 15:13

Queen of bloody everything was similar.

fascicle · 26/02/2019 17:01

You could try Three Things About Elsie (Joanna Cannon) and The Music Shop (Rachel Joyce) - both reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant in terms of warmth and humour of the writing.

VeryFoolishFay · 26/02/2019 18:38

Oh yes, Three things about Elsie was brilliant.

VeryFoolishFay · 26/02/2019 18:40

And my favourite Kate Atkinson novel was Human Croquet - amazing!

Elephantina · 26/02/2019 19:03

Ding ding ding, claim to (mild) fame, my friend is the author of Three Things About Elsie. And the goats and sheep one.

She is a very warm, extremely clever person. And will be delighted that you enjoyed it.

Lunaballoon · 26/02/2019 19:15

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyle. I’m reading it now following a recommendation on another Eleanor thread. Loving it!

Delatron · 26/02/2019 20:11

Oh I loved Normal People. A beautiful book.

WillGymForPizza · 26/02/2019 20:48

Came on to say The Cactus as well. The main character is very, very similar to Elinor.

VeryFoolishFay · 26/02/2019 20:52

I absolutely loved both of her books, particularly Elsie; would be delighted if you would pass that on!

Elephantina · 27/02/2019 06:00

Of course Fay.

I've got loads of books saved to my Audible wish list now, thanks to this thread. I usually go for crime thrillers or mysteries, but I LOVED Elinor so it'll be nice to try some others in a similar vein. I've been struggling to find stuff that intrigues me enough to spend a credit on, my last Lisa Jewel I gave up on after finding the first chapter screamingly dull, and at the moment I'm listening to a fairly harrowing autobiography by a forensic pathologist...

TheWeeMacGregors · 27/02/2019 06:16

I’ve just finished Dear Mrs Bird and loved it. Brilliant, short and a very easy read.

eggofmantumbi · 27/02/2019 06:41

Matt Haig maybe?
