Sick pay working for NHS advice needed

I am a nurse. Last June i was off for 4 months due to abdo hysterectomy. I was on full basic pay. Today i went for an ultrasound as i have a lare bulge on my left had side. I have a post surgery and its no surprise ots happened since ive been back to work despite emails from OH saying i cant be running with bags to emergencies. Im quite frankly terrifed of having to go off sick again. And of surgery again. Havent seen a surgeon yet but im guessing its inevitable? I know nothing about hernias.

My question is when does the sick pay kick in again? Is it a year since my return or since I went off sick in June? Im terrified i will be off more than two months. I cant live off half pay for very long as it will barely cover the rent. Also, will i get into trouble for being off sick again twive in a year? I never take days off but now i may have to be pff for a second lengthy period 😧

Hi, I am sure your rolling year starts from the start of absence. 2x episodes of long term sick (more than 28 days) is treated more leniently (sp) than 4 episodes of one day.
Even if they were not happy the absence management process would at worst be a disciplinary hearing with a 3 month verbal warning Id say.
Do whats best for you, we dont get any thanks or prizes for bravery in the NHS x

The day you go off sick they look back for the last six months. So if you have had 1 month off in that time you're entitled to 5 months full pay.

Cant answer directly but you might be over thinking this. Most hernia repairs are straight forward, daycare surgery and usually 1-2 weeks off work (although you might need to be redeployed to lighter duties for 6 weeks if heavy lifting etc). Why don’t you wait and see what the surgeons recommend, and then talk to OCcy health etc

It is the last 12 months since you went off in the NHS, not 6.

Even if you went off in April, by June your full pay would kick in again I should think.

Sorry your post is a bit difficult to read - are there some typos? ‘Bulge’ could be a variety of things, try not to panic until they’ve seen you.

How long have you been working for the NHS? I had a long-term absence last year. I am entitled to 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay because I’ve been with the NHS a long time. I got a letter informing me I would drop to half pay on x date (I was actually able to return to work after surgery so it didn’t kick in). Where I work it’s cumulative so you get full pay for every sick day for up to 6 months, then it drops. So by my trust’s way, you’d still be able to have another 2 months full sick pay before you dropped to half pay.

Y i might be over thinking it and im totally hopeful that its straight forward. Because i live on my own with no one nearby I think the worse. When i was off after my hysterectomy they slsonsent me a letter saying you will go down to half pay from X and, even though I was well back by then my pay still went doen to half 🙄so Indont take anything for granted with my trust.

If your pay dropped when you were off for 4 months then did you have any absence prior to it or are you sure you have full 6 month entitlement. How long have you worked in NHS

Forever!

Yes i was rushed to hospital with a burst cyst which i recovered from but it started the whole surgery off.

They did refund me as they hadnt been informed i was back. By my reckoning theres about six weeks from the original six months left. I just wondered when it started again.

It might not even happen, I hope.
