What do I need to do with DD before she starts school in September?

On my list so far...

Getting dressed/undressed and turning clothes the right way round (shoes we’re ok with)

Getting dental & hair cut appointments

Spelling her first name, letter & number recognition

Reinforcing that she is allowed to ask questions if she is unsure of anything

Telling her that she mustn’t be shy if she needs the toilet

What have I missed?

Practice opening her lunchbox, and closing her water bottle!
Open a banana!
Zipping her coat at break is a big one!
Being able to recognize the labels on her clothing as her own.
Please and thank you go a long way!

Try not to stress about all this. Some kids can do this, some can’t. It’s more important to protect her positive attitude to school than to tie shoelaces!

Don’t get the dental and haircut thing, isn’t that just normal routine?!

Being able to wipe your pooey bum properly and wash hands is important.

Going to the toilet as soon as you feel the need and it waiting around playing. I don’t think you need to ask in reception, unless it’s quiet time (that’s the case on our school).

Sitting down and listening.

You’ve got ages to go yet. She’ll pick up most of these things at nursery over the next few months.

Don't build it up as a big ting! It can make many children quite anxious to have school looming on the horizon.
She will have an opportunity to visit and meet her teacher much nearer the time. I wouldn't really be mentioning school until then unless she asks questions herself.

I think all teachers want is her to be able to dress and undress, be able to go to toilet on her own, eat and recognise her name. Anything else would be a bonus. A job for you would be to label everything. If you have a picture sticker cut it in half and put in the shoes - makes it easier to tell left to right.

Eye test?

Fireshot · 25/02/2019 10:13

Thanks!

A lot of these have been done for a while because of nursery and pre-school so that’s a relief for me.

I am a bit of a list-ticker so like to be prepared- yes - dental, eyes & hair appointments are the norm so I am just ensuring I haven’t forgotten them Smile

I worked as a nanny for years and had to prepare the children physically and emotionally for school as well as naming absolutely everything although it never occurred to me to cut a picture in half for shoes. Thanks!

I think subconsciously I am worried Iwill forget a biggie, hence my asking here. I don’t want to be ‘that mum’ who forgets the glaringly obvious 😂

Take a look at the Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo and see what you think? Similar vein to Harry Potter, (Haven't read these with my
kids yet but we have the set 'on hold' for a bit later)

The Enid Blyton 'Mystery' or 'Adventure' sets might be worth a look, too. or 'What Katy Did' / 'Anne of Green Gables'?

Tempted to suggest Mallory Towers (much beloved in my childhood) but I spotted a thread on another forum this week by a mum who had just re-read them and couldn't believe what a nasty of bullies Darrel and her friends were!

Whoops - sorry all - wrong thread! Can't work out how to delete my reply. x
