Just that - planning a staycation this summer. We're in Yorkshire and I'll be doing all the driving, reasonably tight budget so happy to hostel/camping pod but don't want to camp this time.

So, what to see and do? Fancy Edinburgh and Nessie, furthest I've ever been is Stirling. Give me your best suggestions please!

I know Mortonhall campsite in Edinburgh has pods and statics to rent. Buses at end of the drive, good walks around the campsite.
Think Drumohr in East Lothian just outside Edinburgh does pods too.
Hilly Cow in West Lothian does wigwams

Edinburgh has 2 beaches, one in Portobello and the other at Cramond/ Silverknowes.
You can walk out to the tidal island from Cramond, theres also a nice walk up the side of river Almond.
Portobello has quite a few places to eat from vans selling coffee and crepes on the Prom to cafes and pubs.
Theres also Turkish baths in the swim centre.
Otters have been seen in the Figgate park

Arthurs Seat and Queens Park have 3 lochs, St Margarets loch has lots of juvenille swans and Daubentons bats flitting over at dusk or late evening. Theres other bats along treelined walkway at back of Holyrood Palace.

Electric brae is a road in Ayrshire but water runs " uphill" . Looks very ordinary otherwise

And while in Falkirk do Callendar House and park, both free.

I second the suggestion for the seafari trip to Corryvreckan whirlpool. I've done that trip and it's a great day out. You could stay in Oban and do Seafari one day and get the ferry to Mull on another day.

There are camping pods in Oban, or a couple of backpacker hostels.

Would they like standing stones, burials and crannogs? Loads of castles.

If you go to Edinburgh get the bus tour where the pass lasts for 24hrs. Then you can do an afternoon/evening trip and use it the next day to zip around. It’s a good way to get your bearings.
