Carpet in bathrooms?!?!?

FruitCider · 24/02/2019 18:20

I went up stay with a family member yesterday. This was the first time I'd stayed there so was shocked to find wooden floors in the lounge and carpets in the bathroom/toilets, especially because the carpet was powder pink! I've only seen this once before in another house with green carpets. Is it a class thing? My relatives and the aforementioned household are quite wealthy. They both also have a bidet. I'm feeling confused! And after my recent trip I'm pretty sure I'm a peasant.

Carpet is bathrooms (and bidets also) are a dated thing. Only even see it in old houses/houses redone by people who are very out of touch.

RainbowWaffles · 24/02/2019 18:23

My parents had carpet in the bathroom and they definitely aren’t upper class, they just have strange ideas and taste. Generally it’s considered pretty unhygienic.

gamerchick · 24/02/2019 18:24

Well it wouldn't be me. 3 boys in the house = carpets in toilets silly.

The house is only 20 years old. The kitchen is vvv modern.

When my DC were tiny I had hot pink carpet put in the bathroom, which was downstairs. It was awesome - warm and comfy for bathing and changing them and easier on the knees when bathing babies and it looked wicked. If we'd stayed in that house I would have got rid of it once they were showering themselves. But I loved it.

People were AGHAST. Like, everyone. AGHAST, I tell you.

We had carpet in our old bathroom, not really sure why we had it put down but it was fine, stayed lovely and clean for the 6yrs we lived there! We're definitely not middle class or wealthy. I wouldn't have carpet in the bathroom in our new house though, we have a baby son now and I don't fancy toilet training him with a carpet in the bathroom :o

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 24/02/2019 18:27

The only people I know with a bidet are very comfortable & I aspire to have one!

I also have carpet in my bathroom...it's care home best & can be bleached if required.

Bloody love it...it's an offcut from the gym I had carpeted, our excellent carpet bloke suggested it & it's ace

EggysMom · 24/02/2019 18:27

My parents have carpet everywhere except the kitchen and the downstairs toilet. I've tried to explain that this is probably not helping them to sell their house, but they are adamant - they like carpet, therefore other people will like carpet.

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2019 18:28

My parents had carpet in the toilet and bathroom (they're divorced but my dad still lives in the house, and still has the carpet.
Also a house dh and I rented had carpet in both bathrooms.
My family are working class through and through, but I love carpet in the bathroom, so lovely and warm under foot than freezing cold floors.

FruitCider · 24/02/2019 18:29

How can a bidet be old fashioned?. It’s for washing your butt!

Having a bidet isn't old fashioned, the style of bathroom suite however is. It was like this with gold taps. (Not actual bathroom, obviously).

We had a carpet in the bathroom of our old house and it went damp and black around the bath. When my dad took it up, the floorboards were rotted.

MitziK · 24/02/2019 18:37

Carpets and bidet were very aspirational in the 1970s/80s.

I have no objection to the idea of a bidet (and have a secret wishlist of, amongst other things, a Japanese style bog when I'm rich and famous as if), but the two together - and the style of fixtures - makes me think your relatives might be thinking of 1970s/80s interior design as the high point of luxury and taste.

The instant my ex fucked off, I ripped up and threw the carpet he insisted upon laying in the bathroom out of the flat window. It was foul.

MaisyMary77 · 24/02/2019 18:48

This is how our bathroom looked when we first moved to our house. The carpet absolutely stank! Taking it up was grim.
Didn’t take much to revamp it and we kept the budget as it’s useful for washing feet... 😆

Very random autocorrect 😀

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2019 18:55

My elderly parents have powder pink carpets in both bathrooms. I think they are grim & unhygienic but my DM likes the warmth under her feet so wouldn't dream of replacing them.

DH & I once bought a house that had carpets in both the bathrooms and the kitchen. The first thing we did was rip them out.

LazyFace · 24/02/2019 19:00

Feet Grin
I never understood bidets. Are you supposed to sit on the cold thing and fall inside or balance? Or you stand over and use it as an upright shower?
If I felt the need, I'd just sit on a towel on the side of the bath.

BadlyAgedMemes · 24/02/2019 19:14

Not a fan. We rented a place with a carpeted bathroom, which had minor leaky bits here and there. Nothing that a quick wipe of the floor after a shower wouldn't have fixed, had it not been for the carpet. We did our best to keep things dry, but it still got stinky and mouldy. The fact that you couldn't mop it seemed unhygienic, too, but that could just be my perception.

I grew up in foreign parts, with all bathrooms having a drain on the floor, and basically at least pretending to be wet rooms, although issues with damp were more common than people realised, I think. We had bidet showers (pictured!) instead of bidets, and they were pretty handy, though! Clean your bum, and clean the toilet afterwards!

I’ve just renovated my bathroom and the best thing was getting rid of the carpet. It’s a block of flats and I think the group made life easier for themselves by just carpeting all through.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 24/02/2019 19:48

We rented a place with cream carpet throughout, including the bathroom. It wasn't too bad with just me and DH but we bought rubber backed mats (lots of them) to keep the carpet as dry as possible and the carpet was pretty new. However, I would have to have a carpet cleaner if it was our house and I would want to replace with a hard floor and underfloor heating (if money was no object).

Auntpetunia2015 · 24/02/2019 19:57

Pink plush carpet in the en suite we bought last year and a bidet. House only built 1989..pink carpet foul. I refused to go in the room when we looked around. And it was literally the first thing to go when we got the keys. Keys Friday. Workman mate round Saturday to take up horrible carpet.

tilder · 24/02/2019 20:06

Carpet in a bathroom is like wallpaper in a bathroom. Dated and a mould generator.

MIL has both. Doesn't understand why we don't. She thinks our feet will get cold without carpet. Never been sure on the reason for wallpaper.

groundcontroltomontydon · 24/02/2019 20:14

If one doesn't have a bidet, where does one defrost one's turkey?

Jolonglegs · 24/02/2019 20:15

Carpets in bathroom/toilets and men don't mix.
