Recommend a vacuum cleaner

Really boring thread for a Sunday evening but can anyone recommend a good vacuum cleaner please? We started with the Dyson animal but I took it apart to clean and then it just smelt of dog after 🤢. I then had a cordless cheap one which was great while it lasted but packed up pretty quickly. The latest is a Shark but this is now playing up. It makes an awful noise as it's running and the suction with the nozzle is non existent. I've only lived here for 2 and a half years, surely they should last longer than this! Does anyone have any recommendations? We have a short haired dog and usual mess from a family. Sorry about the lack of paragraphs but you don't seem to be able to add them on a samsung.

Miele every time.
Our last one was 12 years old and went through two house extensions before sounding a bit wheezy.

New one is so good. Which? always rate them.

Miele bagless.

Can't fault it - if we had more than carpet on the stairs, I'd buy the additional Turbo brush attachments, but the standard ones supplied do us perfectly well, even with one 'normal' TwatCat and one FluffyArsedMareCat to send tumbleweeds gently cascading across the floors.

It's so agreeable to use, DP has done all the vacuuming ever since we got it this time last year.

Had a Dyson Animal back in the past. Alright, but heavy, noisy and I ended up taking their Turbo Brush to pieces after every time I used it to get the strands of hair and fluff out, I had to wash the filter every third use (so bought a second so that I could just swap them over) and the plastic self destructed by the third year. It was only a tiny 2 bed flat, too, so it's not as if it was having to cover a great deal of mileage.

Tried a couple of uprights, which were absolutely useless.

Henrys don't clean as well and I hate paying for bags. All other cleaners I've had have gone poufft within about a year of limited use or I've been unable to find replacement bags that actually fitted properly.

To give you an idea of how quiet the Miele is, I've got two cats that have always been absolutely terrified of vacuum cleaners - hysterical scrambles to get as far away from the things as possible. We can now vacuum right up to within six inches of them as they sleep before they slowly open one eye and decide they might want to wander off into the kitchen to see whether there are any snacks available.

Oh the Miele sounds pretty fab then. I'll check it out and see if I can make the budget stretch. I've seen a fitted Miele double fridge with additional wine cooler and while amazing, would have required a remortgage to afford it!

I got the C3 ecoline silence. It's quieter than the dishwasher. Can vacuum after kids are in bed, it's so much less hassle. It's bagged but I quite like it because it seals everything up so well. The bags last 2-3 months so it's not expensive to buy them.

MitziK · 24/02/2019 18:47

Ha ha! I'm a Miele wannabe - got the vacuum cleaner and an entry level undercounter freezer and don't regret either purchase in the slightest - will be replacing the aged Bosch washing machine with one when it finally goes poufft.

I got stick for not buying the cheapest possible appliances/being a snob, but I figured that replacing something every couple of years is a false economy proven right by having gone through three cheap ovens in eight years and something that's used so frequently needs to be up to the job.

Keep an eye out for special deals - Miele have them quite frequently through places like John Lewis or AO - and if you use a cashback site, clicking through to buy can often mean another nice little bonus.

Miele cylinder - best vac I ever had!

Moondancer73 · 24/02/2019 18:59

Absolutely Miele. I had one before and it lasted over ten years. I now have a dyson - got it second hand - and it's lousy. I works as a cleaner and Miele are by far and away the best cleaners I use in any of my clients homes. They can be pricey but they are totally worth the money.

We've tried many hoovers and settled on a Henry. They are a bit cumbersome to use but the suction is great and they last very well.

DramaAlpaca · 24/02/2019 19:02

I really rate my Miele Cat & Dog C3.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 24/02/2019 19:02

another vote for Miele

I have this one. It's very light, compact but punches well above its weight and I'm very happy with it. The bags are really easy to fit and it has a proprietal filtration system that seems very effective.

They also have this one specifically for cat & dog hair

Miele or Sebo.
Had our Sebo for 14 yrs now and survived a few house extensions and severe DIY.

Villanellesproudmum · 24/02/2019 19:10

I’ve got a Harry vacuum and its really powerful, nearly sucks my carpets up! It has a charcoal filters for pet hair and smells.

Somethingsmellsnice · 24/02/2019 19:12

Are you sure nothing is stuck in the Shark as I had no suction and found a pice of clear plastic inside blocking the hole into the dirt collector. Now its like new.

LindaLa · 24/02/2019 19:34

Vax mach air upright.

I have four constantly shedding animals and my long hair is moulting.

Only vacuum that works!

LifeBeginsNow · 25/02/2019 02:17

A pretty resounding win for Miele there. My DH is laughing at me asking the question but he's the one getting most frustrated by going over the same bits of fluff and not picking anything up. I'll check over the Shark again and see if we can take more bits apart. Tape over the vent worked for a while and stopped the noise but then caused it to overheat. I can't believe how quickly these cleaners breakdown!

I'm not surprised Miele is so recommended. I have the one that tellit linked at 19.04. It is SO quiet and the filtration is very good (we have several pets and i am asthmatic).

I got mine about £70 cheaper than the John Lewis price shown on an Amazon deal.

Shark duo clean lift away, it is amazing for our cat hair!
