Head lice and very long hair

Disclaimer: I have never had to deal with head lice before.

First day of half term here (France) and DD has brought home head lice for the first time. Her hair is very fine and goes down to her bum. I have washed it and smothered it with conditioner, I have gone over it with a nit comb and wrapped her head in cling-film. I have set fire to her sheets, sacrificed two pigmy goats and danced naked on a pile of cabbage leaves. Am I forgetting anything?

Please tell me I'm not gong to have to chop her hair off.

My DD had hair like this. Not combing it was a nightmare as you have to be so thorough and it took ages. Hedrin was much easier and got rid of them straight away but you have to leave it in for several hours before washing off.

It depends on the comb.
It's only a nitty gritty comb that I've found to work.
Did you see 'bits' when you cleaned off the comb?
Does she have loads of lice?
I make sure to use a white opaque conditioner

Grin Nits are the worst.

I found blow drying the hair helps. It's dries the lice out apparently and we got rid of them within the week. If you take your kids to a professional nit remover (they exist) they use some kind of specialised apparatus to do just that, but I found a hairdryer works just as well.

Just go buy the hedrin that's like baby oil. You put it on dry hair, watch the little fuckers drown, leave it to dry naturally then wash out the next morning. No fannying about with conditioner etc. Repeat 1 week later.
My DD hair is thick and bum length. 1 bottle did both treatments.

My dd has fine but super curly hair - after treating with conditioner and nitty gritty - I straightened her hair with irons - kills anything remaining!

Mustbetimeforachange · 24/02/2019 12:11

My DD had head lice in very long curly hair. I used herein, then combed every few days for a few weeks just to be sure. I may have done a second bedroom application too. It took a few weeks to be really sure they were gone.

Mustbetimeforachange · 24/02/2019 12:12

Herein & bedroom = Hedrin of course

PhilomenaButterfly · 24/02/2019 12:14

I have long hair. It took 4 weeks of Hedrin, but I'm finally free of lice.

Myyearmytime · 24/02/2019 12:16

Hair straighteners
Kill everything dead.
Dyeing hair will also kill them off .

GisellaGiselle · 24/02/2019 12:23

Another vote here for Hedrin. You won't need to comb them out, they will just fall out because the little fuckers are dead.

Repeat after exactly a week - this is necessary with all headlouse treatments in order to zap the ones which have hatched out since the first treatment. Some products claim to kill off the eggs as well, but sadly I have always found them to be lying about this.

Not sure if I can get heroine here, off to google.

Hedrin Once. fab stuff but I did do it twice just to make sure!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/02/2019 12:31

I found a Swiss website with hedrin-French slogan 'Beau jeu Contre les poux!'

Mustbetimeforachange · 24/02/2019 12:31

OP if you don't have Hedrin you need to make sure it is one of the products make of silicones. It drowns the buggers and doesn't create resistant ones but it doesn't kill the eggs.

Maybe not in France though

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 24/02/2019 12:33

Poux it on my link looks similar.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 24/02/2019 12:42

I've never needed to cut hair, and have two here with waist-length hair or longer.

I really recommend this lice programme alongside the previous recommendations of a good nit comb, conditioner or baby shampoo, and personally, I like spray-on head lice treatment, done and left overnight to wash in the morning for day 0 and 7 (and quick dry combs for 'off' days). I wish you the best of luck getting rid of the buggers.

Girlicorne · 24/02/2019 13:27

They hate tea tree oil, either a few drops neat in wet hair after conditioning and combing through or you can buy a head lice repellent spray with it in which doesn't really smell. DD had them in summer, took about two weeks of combing with conditioner and the nitty gritty comb, I now comb through weekly and spray the repellent and she hasn't had them since. They are grim I feel itchy now!!
