What is this creature?

Yesterday I noticed this crawling up the wall of our downstairs bathroom.
The house is only 13 years old and we haven't lived here long.

Yesterday I found the exact same bug in the same place crawling up the same wall, which is the creepy bit. It was put outside and now another has appeared. Where are they coming from?

Looks like a carpet beetle to me

boglife · 24/02/2019 11:22

Looks like a ladybird to me. Can't see image well on my phone. I wouldn't worry. They like to overwinter in buildings

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/02/2019 11:35

Carpet beetle

mangolover · 24/02/2019 11:43

See that just makes it more strange. We've been here nearly 5 months and it's the first of anything I've seen but in the same place in 24 hours. In the downstairs loo. Except downstairs is completely laminate & Lino.

We have carpet on the stairs and upstairs but not downstairs. And they were scuttling in an upwards direction both times.

That just makes no sense

They hatch out in spring so I would say the warmer weather has caused a few eggs to hatch.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/02/2019 11:47

And they don't just hang around in carpets, any dark crevice will do. So gaps in laminate planks, cracks around skirting boards, round the edge of lino, etc.

Bluesheep8 · 24/02/2019 11:49

It's a lady bird. There are several in our house at the moment. Must be the time of year.

Silvercatowner · 24/02/2019 12:04

Looks more carpet beetle than ladybird to me.

tumtitum · 24/02/2019 12:06

We had an influx of weird beetley things once and they were coming from a couple of house plants. Do you have any plants there? We got rid of the plants and voila, no more bugs!

Haggisfish · 24/02/2019 12:07

It’s definitely carpet beetle and not ladybird.

happychange · 24/02/2019 12:12

Definitely not a ladybird!

dementedpixie · 24/02/2019 12:15

Wrong colour for a ladybird

NanTheWiser · 24/02/2019 12:31

Carpet beetle - warm spring weather makes them come out of hiding.

Nomummyonlyzuul · 24/02/2019 12:47

Google varied carpet beetle and have a look at the pics, I'm pretty sure it's a carpet beetle!

mangolover · 24/02/2019 13:22

No plants @tumtitum.
I'm not allowed them apparently.
I'm not responsible enough.
I'm a mum of 3 but I'm not allowed a house plant

Are you responsible enough to be allowed pets? You could name them and build them a little house.

Sorry. That was my inner bitch coming out.

They are definitely carpet beetles. You need to vacuum under your fridge, behind the cooker and right in the corners where the skirting boards meet the floors, as the larvae have been munching away happily on crumbs.

I wouldn't mention it to anybody stupid enough to refuse you plants, as you'll never hear the end of it.

SpringForEver · 25/02/2019 00:31

Carpet beetles. You will need to check your clothing and linens because the larvae of these sweet little bugs are called woolly bears and they eat your stuff.

The damage looks like moth holes.

Get some pet flea spray and treat your house with it, check your fabrics, spray your wardrobes and under beds, sofas etc. They appear from nowhere and actually come in from outside too.

Treat the house before they really settle in. And get rid of every one you see.

The larvae look like tiny woodlice and they climb up walls, tiles and into folded fabrics, hide in floorboard cracks, skirting board gaps and down the back of your bed.

If you don't want to use chemical sprays you can get diatomaceous earth but it is very fine and dusty.
