Boring - name tags for nursery

HolyShmoly · 23/02/2019 16:09

My baby is starting nursery soon. To distract myself from feeling all emotional about our lovely little maternity leave bubble coming to an end I'm thinking about details. What kind of name tag system do I need for clothes, teddies, etc?
Do I need to sew labels on? Do I just get a permanent marker? What's the story?

I did fabric name tags for my PFB. Lovingly stitched personalised tags on everything!

I have now invested in an ink stamper thing with their names on. Some things just get initialed with a marker pen.

MilkItTilITurnItIntoCheese · 23/02/2019 16:26

Just get a sharpie. You'll spend half your life sewing or ironing on labels. Remember to label everything including gloves/scarves/hats etc.

hammylehamster · 23/02/2019 16:29

I use different labels for different items.

Sew in for inside gloves, hat and scarf as my iron on ones don't take as well to wool and they don't tend to have labels to write on/stick on.

Stick on for shoes and iron on/ fabric sharpie for coats as they last better with washing.

I don't label clothes as my nursery bag up dirty clothes and put them straight in his rucksack when they take out clean spares so are never left out to be mislaid.

I'd sew onto teddies/comforters.

We've got great ones from wovenlabelsuk.com. You just stick them on to the tag in the clothes. Saves a lot of faff with sewing!

Blueuggboots · 23/02/2019 16:32

I buy mine from petit fernand. They do different types such as iron on, stick in, shoe labels and they come in a handy book. You can choose colours, fonts and a motif.

Yes - another vote for the sticky lables that Rogue1234 suggests - I don't know why anyone would do anything else now I've started using them.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/02/2019 16:34

I started off sewing them on, then I got iron ons, then sharpies, now the school uniform store sews them on for you (thank god).

There are loads of really nice online stores that sell lovely personalised labels.

With regard to coats ( or more expensive items of clothes ) I always mark that item somewhere else with my child's initials. We've had items go missing and the parent has sworn blind that the item is their child's . I could prove it wasn't by showing the ' secret mark' . The name label was missing surprisingly

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/02/2019 16:39

Inside the pockets! Some git always tries to pinch coats.

Finfintytint · 23/02/2019 16:39

I had personalised embroidered tags and spent quite a bit of time sewing them on but soon got fed up of that and switched to the marker pen labels. I over ordered the number of embroidered tags though and I still have a bag of them (he’s 25, lol).

10 years on, I have tried everything and have reverted to sewn on woven nametapes. For big/expensive/important things I also Sharpie - coats especially. Name tapes don’t fade or peel off, and can be removed for younger siblings or eBay. Or used again. My dc are now 7 and 10, and I sit down with a big pile of new school clothes and name tapes with a good film a couple of evenings in August.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/02/2019 16:40

Stikins. I've tried several, those are the only ones that actually stay on.
If items erm..accidentally showing up in someone else's wardrobe is an issue, writing inside the sleeve with a sharpie should help.

When my DS started school (my first born) I thought it would be so cute to have sew-in labels and I'd even sew them into his socks!

When DD was born, I still bought sew-in labels but the novelty had definitely worn off by then.
Since she's been at secondary school (and I had run out of the sew-in ones), I ordered easy printed ones that you just stick on!!! Genius!

happymummy12345 · 23/02/2019 16:57

We got sew in labels and took ds's uniform to a sewing shop to get them sewn in. I ordered them on eBay with navy font to match his navy uniform. It looks so much better I think

Lwmommy · 23/02/2019 16:58

I started.out good and named everything with iron or sew in labels but i hated doing it so i just bought some bundles.of cheap clothes for.nusery and hoped they wouldnt all go missing.

Coats and shoes had her name written in sharpie in several.locations.

anniehm · 23/02/2019 16:58

I bought 12 dozen before nursery and they lasted through school (I did unpick some!)

Solewindow · 23/02/2019 17:02

Stickers from mynametags.com

Some with name, some with name and my mobile number (for putting in higher value/easily lost items like teddy bears, coats, shoes).

spugzbunny · 23/02/2019 17:04

My DD is just about to start too! Didn't even think about this! I've just ordered some!

What does everyone send little girls to nursery in? Is it always tops and trousers or do you send them in dresses? I don't want them to think I'm too precious about her! Which I totally am!

Crabbyandproudofit · 23/02/2019 17:04

First DC had sewn-in labels, with her full name, on everything. Second DC's name started with the last letter of DC1's name so I shortened the labels and sewed them onto most things. DC3 (still lots of ,labels left) got surname only or market pen, when I remembered!

Elisheva · 23/02/2019 17:05

Stikins- they go on everything, clothes, shoes, lunchboxes/water bottles.

hammylehamster · 23/02/2019 17:14

@spugzbunny it's up to you!

My nursery has uniform polo shirts, lots of the children wear them in 2+ and pre-school as they like being the same as the staff, little ones don't notice. Mine went in clothes I wouldn't mind being ruined, hand me downs and supermarket multi packs of t shirts and leggings. DD did go in dresses and playsuits in summer. Crocs are fugly but are a great alternative to sandals for nursery in summer.

Sirzy · 23/02/2019 17:16

I get supatags from nametags4u go on anything and stay on!

Ds is in year 4 and has a polo shirt from reception and the label is still fine

mowbraygirl · 23/02/2019 17:32

I did have till a few weeks ago about 12 name labels that were for DN now aged 55 for when he started boarding school as his parents were abroad I used to help out with uniform. I was telling DN I had found them and he said could I send them to them as their youngest is at a new school and everything has to be labelled and they have run out and hadn't got around to ordering new ones luckily she has same initial as her father. I also still have some from when DD45 and DS43 in my sewing box maybe when DGD aged 1 goes to school she could have her fathers as again same initial.

Sauvignonblanket · 23/02/2019 17:49

Stickers from mynametags.com for me too. They go on everything. You can personalise them as well.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 23/02/2019 20:06

If you have loads to do it’s worth doing on sewing machine, so much quicker!
