Royals Uncovered

Before I start, this isn't a Meghan Markle thread. I've no interest in getting into a debate about her, it ends up a mess. This is more the royals in general.

I'm posting as I'm wondering if recent events in NYC hasn't just highlighted exactly what all the royals do? They go to great pains to spin everything in a positive light so the public will swallow it but was this past week just the Royals normal behaviour without the PR window dressing?

Edward went on a skiing trip on a private jet, I'm sure William and family did also.

Given Brexit and the uncertain times we live in, is this excess going to be tolerated? I think everything will be picked apart now.

I know they have piles of money but none of us want it shoved in front of us HM manages to give off the perception that she watches her pennies, she gets away with it too given her service. The next in line and so on will really have to thread a fine line with their extravagances, they don't have the same goodwill. They need to trim it right back to the direct line. It doesn't seem like Charles is trying to slim anything down despite what he has said.

A hereditary head of state is an anachronism in the 21st century.

ForalltheSaints · 23/02/2019 18:22

I'd rather have a Royal family than President Blair (or Cameron or whomever).

Mummy2017 oh I agree with you totally that it's a hideous life, having every moment of your public life scrutinised, and that of your DC, your life discussed constantly, and being able to trust many people. It must be awful.

Having huge estates in which to relax privately does compensate a little for this though.

However, I think that is a slightly different issue to where their wealth comes from and how they spend it. And how many members of the extended family the tax payer is expected to support.

The tax payer supports no members of the extended Royal Family!

Sanguineclamp · 23/02/2019 20:00

Did we not pay for all of their security?

user1457017537 · 23/02/2019 20:07

What about the grace and favour apartments

Sanguineclamp · 23/02/2019 20:08

Do we not?

And as mentioned below, I don't think there is enough transparency as to who is paying what and how.

ajandjjmum · 23/02/2019 20:10

We pay for security for the main Royals I understand, but not to distant family. Wasn't it this that caused a huge rumpus with Andrew, because the security people were taken off his daughters?

They pay rent on their apartments, and it is supposed to be market rate, but always seems very low to me!

There is no civil list now thought, with thousands being doled out to all and sundry.

Sanguineclamp · 23/02/2019 20:28

Interesting article here. Hmm

LuciaSpain · 23/02/2019 21:44

No doubt there are downsides to their lives but the positives as far as I'm concerned outweigh the negatives. I'll reserve my concern for the many people using food banks and losing their jobs.

Why don't the royals step out of the line of succession if life is so hard. Not to mention those who marry in, they had a choice.
