Film for DD’s 7th birthday party?

Hi all,
Was wondering if anyone could recommend a film for me to show at DD’s 7th birthday party? Am doing a nail party and also pizza - 7 of her closest school friends coming (all girls). The girls are a bit of a mixture - some horsey, some sporty, some love animals, some into witches and vampires etc - all basically probably more outdoorsy and adventurous than into stereotypically “girly” things (wanting to have their nails done notwithstanding Wink)

Any suggestions gratefully received, as I drawing a mental blank......

Ooh, we do love a bit of retro! She’s a massive Chipmunks fan (Confused) but I think she’s seen them all. I’ll definitely add Beethoven to the list - she loves dogs - I think most of them do!

Thanks again - you’re all brilliant. This is giving me ideas not just for her party, but also for some birthday presents for her - I imagine I could pick up a lot of these on DVD for a few quid on eBay. Smile

Homeward Bound
Beethoven is a good shout!
Fly Away Home could work, though they’re possibly a little bit young
Flubber

I’ve shown her trailers to some of these, and Jumanji seems to be winning so far.....
I thought Book of Life looked great, but she says she’s watched it on TV at her dad’s house..... Would it have been on TV yet? (It looks quite recent).

I think it has been on tv it's a couple of years old.

SerendipityReally · 24/02/2019 13:02

I would err on the very mild for a group of them. I would think Jumanji is too scary for some 6 year olds.

We showed Minions at a 10th birthday once and 2 of them found it too scary. This is perhaps a bit extreme - I still think it was a reasonable choice for that age group - but with 6 year olds I'd be thinking a U.

ElspethFlashman · 24/02/2019 13:06

The BFG has a few Creepy bits. I was surprised how dark it was, really. Not that cuddly.

And Inside Out is about a young girl who gets depressed and there's a really sad bit where a character "dies" - maybe too much for a gang of 7 year old girls.

Sing is absolutely hilarious. It's on Netflix.

Xmasbaby11 · 24/02/2019 13:11

My 7 yo dd loves

Sing
Secret life of pets
Despicable me

These are the films we watch again and again. Also they are films you can talk over and laugh so good for a group.

Some of the suggestions like Coraline would be too dark for my dd. Harry Potter too dark as well as long and complicated.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 24/02/2019 13:14

Don't put on Coraline!! My dd is 6 (nearly 7) and watched with her sister, she's had nightmares for months since.

She loves hotel Transylvania (the 3rd one is pretty new), how to train your dragon, boss baby, captain underpants, the teen titans movie and recently we watched the cat in the hat.

She also likes the shopkins, my little pony girl, monster high films too.

Petalflowers · 24/02/2019 13:17

High School Musical - it was the in-film a few years back

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 24/02/2019 13:39

Nim's Island.

Applesaregreenandred · 24/02/2019 13:55

My friend took DS to see Coraline at the cinema when he was around 8 and he really didn't like it, said it was really creepy.

tinyvulture · 24/02/2019 14:43

Seems like a no to Coraline, at least for the group. I did show dd the trailer and she liked the look of it, so I might get it to show her, although now I’m not too sure even about that.....

No, Coraline is creepy. I would have been terrified of it as a 7 yr old.

Stompythedinosaur · 24/02/2019 15:19

We had High School Musical for dd1's 7th. Descendants went down very well at another sleepover a little while after.

Elflocks · 24/02/2019 15:32

Annie (2014)

tinyvulture · 24/02/2019 20:14

Thank you all - so many good ideas. Currently we seem to have narrowed it down to: Hotel Transylvania (any of them); Jumanji; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Miss Peregrine’s Home for Perculiar Children. The last I keep telling her sounds perfect for her, as she is a perculiar child! Grin

Every time I mention the notion that we need to select something non-frightening, as some of the children might be scared, she sort of scoffs at me, and tells me tales of her various friends’ courage. While I am not going to be guided by this, I kind of admire the attitude! Grin

The Peanuts Movie (Charlie Brown, Snoopy etc)

m.imdb.com/title/tt2452042/

Zoflorabore · 24/02/2019 20:22

My dd has just turned 8 and loves films, watches loads with her dad and her two absolute favourites are oldies.
Matilda and Parent Trap ( Lindsay Lohan plays twins who were separated at birth and end up at the same summer camp, loads of fun and is hilarious for this age group.

ThatsNotAKnifeThatsASpoon · 24/02/2019 20:24

Definitely not Coraline. The only film dd told me she wished she hadn't seen (she saw it at 7 and doesn't scare easily).

lemonface · 24/02/2019 20:24

My 10 year old found jumanji way too scary.

tinyvulture · 24/02/2019 21:01

That’s interesting that Jumanji is scary too..... Peanuts she’s seen (unfortunately), and Matilda..... I kind of remember Parent Trap - I’ll look that up.....

For the record, if I was answering this question from someone else, I would recommend:

Moana (it’s the best)
The My Little Pony Movie (we love this too)
Zootropolis (good old Judy Hop)
The Greatest Show-Man
Sheep and Wolves (it’s this utterly shit animation that hardly anyone has heard of, but DD loves it.)

Though she spends most of her TV time with me watching old episodes of Scooby-Doo and Tom and Jerry. Make of that what you will...... 🤣

Mrscog · 24/02/2019 21:03

I would also have a back up activity - in my experience groups of 7 year olds don’t sit and watch a whole film.

tinyvulture · 24/02/2019 21:24

That is a very good point! There will be an element of getting their nails done..... But the lady doing the nails is my friend, and I was hoping that, beyond the nails part, we would be able to spend time sipping Prosecco and chatting while the children ate pizza and obediently watched the film. A little unrealistic? 🤣

I guess they can go up and maraude around my bedroom and go into my wardrobe and try on my sparkly high heels? Does that count as an activity? 🤣 It seems to be what most of DD’s friends are magnetically drawn to when they come over on a play-date. 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I may be wrong but I think Fantastic Beasts and Miss Peregrine are both 12s. I'm sure you would check. But you should at least let parents know if you are planning to show their 6 year olds 12 films - and preferably ask if that is ok.

And yes to alternative activities. Even if you just bung some Lego out.

tinyvulture · 25/02/2019 00:04

Yep! Will check any film we chose with the parents first - I totally get that I am probably slightly more liberal about this stuff than some people. To be honest I would check anyway - it’s good manners. Dd keeps saying I should ask the other mums for a suggestion of film, actually......
