Does anything help wisdom tooth pain?

SinkGirl · 22/02/2019 16:01

My wisdom teeth have been partially out for years. Every few years I have a few days of crazy pain as they come through a bit more. This is one of those days. I’m on all the painkillers I can take (even morphine as I’m prescribed it for another condition) - I’ve tried ice and heat too. Orajel isn’t helping. Anyone have any other brilliant suggestions? I feel like my jaw bone is about to shatter, and I know by the time I can get a dentist appointment it will settle down again.

I’m petrified of dentists and don’t really want to go through having them all removed anyway since it’s so rare for it to flare up.

I put up with the same thing for about 3 years then it got infected oh god did that hurt so much more.
I went to my local dental hospital they took one look and said my tooth nerve was twisted round my jaws nerve and would not touch it so prescribed antibiotics 3 days later I went to large hospital where they knocked me out and took all 4 out at once.

The only thing that helped with the pain before that was clove oil ( tastes revolting but works)

swashbucklecheer · 22/02/2019 16:08

Clove oil? It's supposed to help tooth pain

BearSoFair · 22/02/2019 16:13

Clove oil usually works for me if I have toothache too bad for Orajel. Tastes vile but it's worth it! I usually wrap a bit of kitchen roll round my finger, drip oil onto that then rub onto tooth/gum.

Mine flare up regularly, about once every 6 weeks. They’re impacted, have complicated nerves and I need a general to have them out, so have refused so far.
I swill my mouth with salty water as hot as I can stand. I also clean and numb it with Anbesol liquid on a cotton bud, as I can’t fit my finger past the swelling. I do this about every hour, and never miss a dose of painkillers.

SinkGirl · 22/02/2019 17:06

Thanks everyone - it really sucks! It’s lucky I have strong painkillers on prescription but honestly they’re not even touching it. It’s awful. Will have to go and get clove oil tomorrow - from the pharmacy I guess?

IME nothing worked for this pain until I had mine extracted.

YouBoggleMyMind · 22/02/2019 17:16

Liquid ambesol, electric toothbrush direct on the area to keep it clean as possible, corsodil mouth wash to keep it clean as possible, salt mouth washes can help too. Both my lower wisdoms are semi erupted and have been for years. I find if I do these things when it begins to grumble, it's better within a couple of days. My dentist was reluctant to remove them due to risk of nerve damage. The only other things are ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine but I see you're already on the good stuff. Hope it goes soon!

Angie169 · 22/02/2019 17:17

Bite the bullet ( um ok suck the bullet ) and get to the dentist , I was terrified but the hospital was absolutely amazing.

eggsandwich · 22/02/2019 17:26

What about corsodyl gel I used it when my gums really hurt and were swollen after my dentist was a bit too rough when he cleaned my teeth and made my gums really hurt and I had tried everything, it worked a treat, I got it from boots they keep it behind the counter.

SinkGirl · 22/02/2019 17:38

Orajel is a pretty powerful local anaesthetic so I’m not sure much else would work better - I can feel that it’s numbing things but the pain is in my jaw so I’m not sure much is going to help at this point.

My teeth are a mess and I do need to go to the dentist. When I lived in London I was referred to have any dental work under sedation at the hospital and it was amazing. Unfortunately I can’t afford private dental treatment and that’s the only way to get sedation round here. Maybe I could convince them to remove my two broken molars at the same time as my wisdom teeth under GA 😳

Clove oil and taking paracetamol and codeine and ibuprofen (within the guidelines). Also ice packs. Nothing worse Sad. Hope it improves.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 22/02/2019 19:21

HAve you got Oragel extra strength, it’s the one with 20% benzocaine, the normal one doesn’t cut it.

SinkGirl · 22/02/2019 22:50

Yes, I’ve got the strong stuff!

Bloody thing is keeping me awake, one of my boys is ill and DH sounds like he’s coughing up a lung so don’t think I’ll sleep much tonight.

Balls, I’m going to have to see a dentist. But of course it’s the weekend. I’m not even registered with one and emergency dental care round here is almost nonexistent. Crap.

God I had problems with mine in the good old days you could buy massive bottles of painkillers from Boots. I used to buy bottled of 200 paracetamol and codeine and stay topped up on those when it was sore. Mine started when I was 17 and I got them all out at 21.

Fizbo · 22/02/2019 23:07

Try and sleep with your head slightly more elevated then normal that helped me with the horrible pressure feeling. Also second the regular salt rinses and taking regular ibuprofen (with food) anti inflammatory pain relief works much better for dental pain. I feel for you, wisdom tooth pain is the absolute worst Thanks

SinkGirl · 23/02/2019 01:36

Still awake - it will settle for a bit then I’ll doze off (upright on the sofa) then it wakes me up. Bloody awful.

I was once like you, then you'll reach a point where the pain will be like nothing you've ever experienced.
Had all 4 out at the same time and I'm so glad I did. Had pain for couple of weeks and that was that.

SinkGirl · 23/02/2019 02:06

Think I’m getting to that point now and I’ve experienced a lot of pain - nearly amputated my arm, had pancreatitis, on morphine for endometriosis...

It will be ease off for five minutes and then erupt again. It’s unbearable.

Gingivitis gel i think its called if you can get your hands on it, it’s a local anethsetic gel but usually only dentists are allowed to buy / use it. I got mine from ebay when having the same issues you just have to be very careful to use a little

LeonoraFlorence · 23/02/2019 07:28

Did you try clove oil and ice pack? I had
Same thing a few weeks ago and this ultimately helped most. I feel for you Sad.

labazsisgoingmad · 23/02/2019 08:12

for wisdom teeth removal is the only long term solution there must be an emergency dental system in place near you does 111 cover teeth they might know where you can go

SinkGirl · 23/02/2019 10:08

Last night was bloody horrendous. It seemed to settle and I went to bed at 4, then woke up just before 5 in absolute agony. Must have dozed off on the sofa around 6am, woke up at 7am with very little pain and it’s just a bit of a twinge now. I don’t understand how or why that happens, but I’m very grateful!

Emergency dental care is awful here - tried to get an appointment for DH when he had an abscess and was in so much pain, they couldn’t get him anything over the weekend. Just hoping it’s over and done with for now, and I can sort something out on Monday - don’t think I can handle another night like that. I guess I do need to have them removed - at least that could be done under anaesthetic, it’s the initially seeing a dentist that’s freaking me out.

Even if I did go and see a dentist today I’m not sure what they could do if there’s no infection - they can’t give me stronger painkillers than I already have and I guess there’s quite a wait to get them removed.
