HELP Nice villages 40 mins commute to Cardiff?

Hi all!

Am currently renting in hay on wye, love it but job opportunities just aren’t good enough for me returning to work after LO, low pay and nothing that really allows me to progress.
Looking to move within a 40 min commute of Cardiff city centre or less, mum is in Brecon so want to be north (free childcare is why we’re here haha). Looking for nice green town / village, good schools and transport links. Any suggestions???

Machen or rudry semi rural north of cardiff

Shookethtothecore · 22/02/2019 22:34

Deffo don’t rely on the roads. They are getting worse

Radyr is lovely, st Fagans is chocolate box. Caerphilly choose your area well and it can be fine ... commuter belt for cardiff and Brecon in driving distance

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 23/02/2019 00:05

Of the areas previously mentioned, if a train station is important:
Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, Heath, Radyr and Taffs Well all have train stations with regular trains in to Cardiff.

Gwaelod y Garth is walkable to Taffs Well station, as is Tongwynlais (and there are several buses from Tongwynlais)

Pentyrch & Creigiau have a bus service in to Cardiff. You'd need to drive to Taffs Well or Radyr stations to catch a train though.

Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Heath are very bustling and prosperous areas of N. Cardiff, shops, restaurants, pubs, takeaways, libraries etc.

Radyr is smaller but still has a parade of shops, various cafes, library, doctor's surgery, restaurant, a small bar and then there's a pub, garden centre and farm shop on the outskirts (between Radyr & Morganstown).

Taffs Well has a co-op, a few pubs and some takeaways.

Gwaelod y Garth has an excellent pub, and a dual stream bilingual school, and is walkable to Taffs Well for a shop.

Pentyrch has a village shop, a butchers, some salons and a couple of pubs.

Creigiau has a Tesco Express, a couple of pubs, an excellent farm shop.

They are all very different villages/areas and you'd really need to visit and get a feel for them.

I'm inclined to agree with some previous posters though, and suggest that your best compromise might well be Abergavenny, in terms of commute for both you to Cardiff and your mum for childcare...

Avoid Taffs Well and Pontypridd! The former has almost nothing there apart from a decent view, the latter is a shithole.

Whitchurch is quite nice.

Ross on Wye

donajimena · 23/02/2019 00:50

Ystrad Mynach, llanbradach, machen or Rudry. The first two aren't on a par with Cowbridge but there are some really lovely pockets in both of those villages. You'd have to do a reccy really

donajimena · 23/02/2019 00:52

If you want a real community feel and don't mind Cardiff then Whitchurch is great but Llandaf, Llandaf North are smaller and just as community minded.

cushioncuddle · 23/02/2019 01:17

Llangybi. Caerleon. Abergavenny. Usk. Crickhowel. Lots of villages around those areas too.

MrsCollinssettled · 23/02/2019 01:24

Live in Crickhowell and train from Abergavenny. Easy access for your mum. Crickhowell has been voted best high street in the UK.

MrsWolfe · 23/02/2019 01:31

Crickhowell.

I’ve been on the Cardiff ring road at 7.30am - yuck!

I’m a born and bred (north) Cardiffian. Cardiff doesn’t have a ring road. 😬

Boobiliboobiliboo · 23/02/2019 08:05

Llandaf, Llandaf North are smaller and just as community minded.

But not easy access to A470 for Brecon.

donajimena · 23/02/2019 20:37

Really? Takes me 5 mins to get on the A470 from llandaf north

mimibunz · 23/02/2019 20:39

My DH grew up in Radyr. Lovely village with a strong community feel.

welshweasel · 23/02/2019 20:40

We live in Abergavenny and love it. 40 mins on train to Cardiff. Plenty of nice restaurants and pubs etc. Amazing walking. I’d have loved to live in caerleon but no train station. Ditto usk and crickhowell.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 23/02/2019 21:00

Really? Takes me 5 mins to get on the A470 from llandaf north

It takes more than 5 mins to get through the lights at the Masons Arms crossroads. 😂

Shookethtothecore · 24/02/2019 08:34

WELSHWEASLE interestingly I live near caerleon and don’t see what the fuss is about but absolutely love Abergavenny!!

donajimena · 24/02/2019 16:32

Boobi station rd, heol don, Merthyr rd, pendywyallt rd turn right at Hollybush. No Masons arms required. 5 mins. Even at peak. Excuse lack of capitals.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 24/02/2019 17:07

I go in the opposite direction a few times a week at peak time and it takes a good 5 mins to get front the Hollybush yo cello Dre roundabout. Always seems busy going the other way too, possibly due to the number of buses.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 24/02/2019 17:07

*to Velindre roundabout
